Cuts out whilst driving- sporadically.
« on: 16 August 2010, 18:13:21 »

Hello all.

Concerning my 2003 (53) 2.2CDX saloon.

When driving at higher speed (60+) the engine will just die for a second or two then suddenly pick up again.

The engine loses power like the car has been turned off, with the nose dipping from loss of power, then whilst keeping accelerator depressed, it returns to normal again. This happens once or twice every couple of weeks, so really is sporadic!

The cat was replaced last year and the engine symbol has been lit ever since- I took it back to the garage who turned this symbol off but it came back on. He said it just meant my emissions may be higher than usual, but, nothing to worry about- could this be related??

Car has done 78000 miles, looked after, sometimes I fill it with Tesco 99% Octane fuel, sometimes the lesser octane fuel- is THIS wrong??

The cam belt has been replaced recently as has the battery.

Thanks for any advice. :-/

Need to plug a code reader into it and possibly run some 'live' data.

Turned the engine symbol off.... Presumably with a code reader or plug in diagnostic tool of some sort? Did he mention any error codes present? If so what where they?

Turned the engine symbol off with his diagnostic reader. The engine didn't do any faults while he was testing and he took it for a drive and it didn't show any faults while driving.

As I say- it is so sporadic (it might not happen for 3 weeks then do it twice in one day) I wondered if the fuel octane was anything to do with it (ie getting too hot with 99octane) or the plug on the CAT when that was replaced???

I can't afford to keep having to pay for diagnostic readings when nothing shows up on it- a mystery to me!

His reader showed no signs apart from slightly high emissions.

I had similar problem on mine but generally at a lower speed.
Ultimately i replaced the throttle body (not cheap but it fixed the problem) but would as a first point recommend cleaning the breathers and throttle body - see mainteneance guide for instructions.

Because when I had a highly tuned 2.8 V6 Sierra (cams, heads, etc etc etc) which I spent far too much money on! a few years back- I had a better response and better speed from the higher octane rated fuel, the larger the engine the more noticeable it becomes so it would seem, so I thought I would try it on the Omega. I have to say it does not seem to make any difference- I guess due to it all being done through the engine management??  Just thought I'd try it! :y
