arggggg misfire still!
« on: 07 August 2010, 16:09:33 »

OK so months on, I'm back to the 2.5v6 Reflection, and I've been so skint I've been driving round with my misfire for months..

Having FINALLY just got some geniune HT leads and fitted them, my lumpy idling and hesitation has gone, and is replaced by just a nice diarrhoea sounding (albeit constant, lol) misfire under acceleration  :'(

Could this be blocked cat? I've done DIS pack, spark plugs, HT leads. No EML on, no codes showing on paperclip test. MAF disconnected = lumpier running by far.

When the cars done a long journey there is a fair whack of heat chucking out from under the car - normal, or not?

Any help now much appreciated. Its really cheesing me off. Especially after getting the 3L Elite nicked GRRRR.

Are you positive that all the leads went on to the correct turrets on the coil pack? It is very easy to get them wrong.

I have the exact same issue, down to the last bit and have done the same myself. I'm pretty sure my cats are knackered (after a years driving with bad misfire and who knows what the last owner did. The cats are on their fourth engine).

Just out of curiosity; can you do a paper clip test and see if you get a code 136? It doesn't throw up a light, just when clipping.

As to the cats, I think I will open them up, dig out the internals and weld in a tube before I put the lid back on. Works like a charm  :D

Yep leads went back on right, I followed a guide on here and referenced against the old pack I had lying around with a mate double checkinng. Its marginally better than it was. I've got thin hands/wrists so I didn't even draw blood  ;D

OK this is how it goes, as simply put as possible:

1) idling (cold start) - faultless tickover
2) as soon as cold start kicks out - lumpy idle, dipping below 5k/fighting not to stall
3) revving at standstill: more foot = slight grumbling misfire
4) revving at pull away: more foot = more misfire, sounds like a tank
5) lift foot back off the gas to about 1/4 or less whilst moving: car jumps back in with full power all the way with a jolt (if gas applied smoothly/slowly)

It feels like not enough exhaust gas is being expelled and its backing up or something.

Cat then is it?

Right guys

I took this mig to my mate at an exhaust centre, he said more likely ICV than a failed cat, as no smell was coming through, but to get it on a diagnostic machine.

So I did...Code 136 is not present, no readouts at all, running or not, just the usual 'no engine voltage' code when off.

Could this simply be the fuel filter? Car's ran out of petrol twice in the last year due to the display reading wrong +/- 20 miles, god only knows about previous owner who looked a bit of a wrongun.

Is this something I can do myself?

Have you checked the vac pipes under the scuttle? Could have been knocked off during recent work. Certainly check ICV. I remember once that I managed to mix up the ICV connector with another one nearby with same connector.
Just double check air and electrical connections and clean ICV with some carb cleaner. Running for that time with missfire will almost certainly kill a cat but they tend to give a rattle.

ICV will not affect running under acceleration.  Was it a new DIS pack?  Old ones can look ok but be knackered inside.  It could be fuel filter but that would be more of a hesitation rather than misfire... a subtle difference.  MAF?  :-/

Its more hesitiation I think, car will pull fine if you slowly depress the pedal, stuttering if you lead foot it.

If you switch the engine on, the display will say 26 miles. Switch off and on again, it can drop to 6 sometimes.

Elite Pete did the DIS pack so I'm unsure if new or known good or otherwise, Pete do you remember?

I disconnected the MAF and it ran even worse unfortunately, even tried a different one, no difference.

Might suggest fuel is it?
