HBV change on a 4 pot

Hey, this is my first post. I just bought a 1996 2.0 Omega GL and have started to fix it using some of the excellent guides on this site.

Recently, I experienced loss of coolant and the symptoms matched that of a faulty HBV. Found a guide on this site (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193594464) and decided to try to replace it myself. 

However, I quickly realized that the job is different on a 4-pot. I already got the scuttle off, but quite frankly, I simply can’t find the thing. Anyone got any advice?

Hi mate & welcome to the OOF :y
The HBV on a 4 pot is situated on the left rear of the engine bay looking from the front. If you look just to the right of the brake servo, then down below the two heater pipes that go through the bulkhead to the heater matrix, you can't miss it (unless it's been nicked ;D). :y

No aircon =no hbv i would say your as not got aircon being the early gls spec :y

philrich: The car is a left-hand-drive (as I live in norway) and the brake servo is place at the far right, looking from the front. The picture shows the engine compartment, with the brake servo (not visible) behind the brake fluid container.


Are there any other leads I can follow? Where do the tubes connected to the HBV go?

Charlie: Yes, the car has an aircon system.

I'm really sorry for that inexcusable faux pas Vegar  :-[ it will teach me to actually 'read' things properly! ;) Looking at your engine layout, I would imagine the plumbing should be similar to a UK spec car?, i.e. the heater matrix pipes on the left of the engine bay entering the cabin bulkhead. To be sure, find the large bore coolant return hose where it appears from the rear of the engine block and it should lead you directly to the HBV. :y

^ I agree.

In this pic of the chunk at the back of the head, on the far right there's a coolant connection which should go to your HBV, if you have one.  Ours doesn't or I'd take a picture of it for you.

I’ve had another go at it and I think you guys were right about not having an HBV, unless it is placed behind the fire shield. None of the tubes led to anything resembling the HBV.  I did however find the source of the leak, which is a tube coming down just behind the exhaust manifold. Pictures do a better job describing where it is. Next time I’ll try to fix a problem, I’ll be more thorough diagnosing what is wrong  ;)




Does anyone know where this tube is coming from? It does not seem to have been connected to anything nor does it seem broken. It just ends and leaks coolant when the engine is warm, especially when the heater is turned off. The leak decreases as the air intake on the heater is increased and seems unaffected by temperature settings.

The only tube that resembles the one you describe is the gearbox breather tube AFAIK? :-/
