Mayday, Mayday v6 2.5 sounds tappety
« on: 20 August 2010, 20:58:12 »

Hi
I am new to this forum, but not to Omega as a car or other manufacturers forums.

I need urgent advice - I got X reg Omega B facelifted V6 2.5.
I just changed water pump and both rocker cover gaskets as spark plugs were swimming in the oil. Car started and run beautifully with healthy sounding engine. I run it in place for 40 min., maybe more. No troubles, good sound, no overheating oil on cam present in sufficient quantity ( only the one you can see from oil cap), reved it up hard several times . I took it than twice around the block - I couldn't hear the engine, smooth gearchange ( its auto). The way it was driving i would give it 10 out of 10. Than I decided to floor it on a motorway - did 120 MPH without any trouble. than when I was cursing with around 60 back home - i was coming to the junction I had to take - so I released the throttle - for first 10 sec it was allright - but than - started sounding like as if tappets dont get sufficient oil.(I would say sound is coming from the inlet manifold assembly). and it is loud - slightly resembles diesel. still plenty of power, the cam that I can see from the oil cap is still oily as it was before.

Any suggestions please    :'(

Let it idle for 10-15 mins and see what happens.

Has it had an engine flush recently or a good record of oil changes?

yes- oil is reasonably clear and is not thin - it was supposedly serviced 2 weeks ago. and than - it wouldn't just go in one go i think - its as if something fell out of the engine. additionally if it was oil related I dont think i would see that much oil through oil cap.

Exhaust manifold gasket leak?

I would have thought this would make a farty, blowy noise, but when ours went it was a really nasty metallic clack.

Just a thought.

Thank you for quick replies.
I am going to the car to run it for 15 min and see what will happen.

Update: Didn't run it for 10 min - reason sligh misfire  that wasn't  there before the sound changed. with higher RPMs misfire becomes less apparent.

I get flashbacks when I read this  :-[
I had this sound on my last engine and the reason was that the cambelt had slipped quite a bit, although mine did this at very low revs. Hope this isn't the case with yours!

Other reasons I can think of:
- Loose spark plug
- One-way valve for the SAI system broken and blowing exhaust into the rubber hose from the pump (or the hose is off)
- Leaking manifold

You say you've changed the water pump. I hope you did cambelt + tensioners at the same time while you were "in there"?  :y

I didn't touch the cambelt. Previous owner had it changed by vauxhall 3 month ago and did 2K from then.

Edit: You say SAI valve - where is it ? - is it the thing-y thats in front of the auxiliary belt ?

Yep. One pipe from each manifold joined together in the middle by a valve. Mine popped off once and made a tappety sound, but not so very metallic though.

If I cant figure it out tomorrow - will record and post the sound in here.
tomorrow in the agenda:
1. checking spark plugs,
2. checking SAI valve and related hoses
2. Oil pressure test
3. checking timing belt for slipping

wish me luck - I will need it. :-[

Hi
Was the tensioner changed along with the belt?  Its usually the tensioner that fails before the belt.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

I have no idea about the tensioner as I am new owner. car still runs. I looked at 3 accessible spark plugs and they are ok, no carbon deposit on them and definitely tight enough. I recorded the sound and will post it in a few minutes.

Somewhat hard to tell from the sound there, but to me it sounds like dry hydraulic lifters.

my point exactly, but sound doesn't vary with sides and the cam that you can see from oil cap is oily like it should be - so I assume that it has sufficient oil pressure for lifters. Another thing is that in my opinion sound comes from the inlet manifold (top part of it - i think you have a different name for it). Its too loud to be precise about it though.

Edit: What about that valve thingy - is it possible its responsible?
