Coolant leak - is it HBV?
« on: 26 August 2010, 16:31:46 »

Hello, my problem only started yesterday. Losing coolant, with the warning coming on on my screen. Had to top up half a pint this morning and another half pint now with only 10 miles driving. It was parked up all day and I noticed a patch on the ground. Roughly in the area in front of driver at bulkhead. Would I be right in thinking this is the HBV, or could it be the matrix, if they are both in that area (I haven't had chance to look under bonnet yet). Does the matrix ever leak? I've got a HBV on order, there's no history of it being changed so I'll do it anyway, but just wondering what anyone else thinks. Thanks. Oh yeah, I'm planning a 80 mile round trip tomorrow to pick an engine up from Amble, will it make it if I take water and coolant and keep an eye on it? Thanks :P

99% it's the HBV, if the matrix leaked it would be on your carpet inside.

Try running that car with the climate set to hot and see how much it leaks, then try on cold. It might leak more one way than the other.

I had HBV problem on my way to Spain as you may have read here. If its the same prob with mine...heaters set to hot stopped the coolant leaking out. I was loosing an expansion tank full every 15- 20 miles. Loss reduced to almost zero on hot....but when the outside temp is 35 plus it is warm inside the car even with all windows down

Pulling the vac hose off it would have the same effect, no? (Without the cabin-cooking)

Blocking the end of the hose would be good I guess, once disconnected.
