Never thought I would ever do such a thing!!!
« on: 25 August 2010, 21:29:56 »

I like to change engine oil at 3K intervals, but mileage creeping up and bad back and shoulder wouldn't clear up.

Decided to use Pela suction pump method. Oil now changed painlessly

Cheaper and less hassle than getting some garage to do it.

Hope next time round though that am better and able to drain properly and change filter as well.

Regards
Roger

I'm sure sucking up the oil won't be a problem, especially if you are changing it every 3k. and hopefully you'll be 'back' to doing it the proper way soon.
Does it have a filter at that interval too?

These things seem to be getting a lot more popular.

Guess they are ideal if you dont have garage / driveway facilities.

Cost would be offset not buying jack and stands etc.

Very safe, whether they do such a good change is up for debate I guess, higher possibility for a bit of sludge to remain surely.

When I do a change, I always chuck a slosh of clean oil in, once the draining has finished to wash out any last bit, then replace plug and refill etc.  Dont think that would be as effective with a pump.

seems a good idea, but you still have to replace the filter.

Td filter is on top! Pump has oil out by the time you change element.
Also does away with problem of threaded sump bung, common on TD with 5k oil changes!

Cautionary tale:

I bought a Pela a little while back, and have used it enthusiastically on both my Golf, and 'er Omega.  Only used it twice on the Omega so far, maybe 3 times on t'other.

Then there was the saga of the blocked oil pick-up, and discovery of a fair amount of crud in the sump whilst sorting it.  Some of the solid matter in the sump was in thin black flakes of varying size.

I speculate that over the years of inadequate servicing prior to our ownership, a 'plating' of solid oil residue formed on the base of the sump.

While 'normal' oil changes were being done, this would have stayed exactly where it was, I'm almost certain, doing little harm.

However, the way that the Pela 'probe' taps down on the bottom of the sump could plausibly have disturbed and broken up some of this crap, freeing it to get involved with the pickup strainer.  :(

This isn't intended to be anti-Pela, just honest; and it is only speculation, as I didn't get the sump right off and couldn't inspect it carefully at the time; the priority was to get up and running asap, minus any debris that I could feel/reach with the sump hanging down on the subframe.

Took the sump off my Golf last weekend as a precaution, and it was clean as a whistle, so I'll have no hesitation using the Pela on that, or on the Omega now that I know there's nothing solid in the sump.  :y

Just something to consider if you don't know the full service history of the motor you're planning to use it on  :)

TBH, if doing regular (3-5k) changes I see no harm in using one of these for every other change... You could even get away without changing the filter at a push I suppose :-/ :-/

Not ideal though ;)

What many boat engines have is a pipe fitting fitted to (or in place of) the sump plug to which is permanently fitted a length of metal tube that loops down slightly before terminating up beside the cylinder head. The vac pump is then connected to the top of that tube, thus eliminating the valid concerns re disturbing hardened crud and not getting the sludge.

Whether you fancy the chances of a steel U bend dangling below the sump of an Omega is down to you. The sump of a boat engine is a bit more protected ;)
