Problem
I cannot change out of Park (P) unless I remove the gaitor and dis-engage the locking mechanism via  a little 'yellow" plastic lever on the lower-left hand side of the gear shifter.

This problem has been intermittent and recently I have changed the brake switch (located behind the brake pedal) when the issue was intermittant however nothing improved.  Now the issue has become permanent.

Any thoughts/ideas on what the issue may be?

Is the locking solonoid even trying to operate? If it is try a little squirt of PTFE spray on the pivots. If it's not even trying then it's either a new solonoid or a rubber band/piece of string to hold it out of the way.

I had to change mine - due to the same problem.

Firstly, buy a replacement lever/mechanism - ebay is a good source, they cost about £25 or so.

Then you have to remove the old lever by drilling out the 5 pop-rivets - thats after you have taken the centre console apart to get access.

Have the selector in N when you lift the lever out  - you can then get to the mechanical joint to the 'box itself.

When you refit the new one you have the joy of fitting 5 new pop-rivets. These are agressive little characters  - so be warned.

I suggest that you test the relay before you do the riveting - just in case it dont work.

Its a pain, but rewarding.

Very tempting to jamb something under the yellow tab I can tell you.  8-)
