Fluid leak ...
« on: 22 August 2010, 09:15:53 »

Hi Guys just joined the site!

I have a 2003 2.2TDi Elite estate which I have had from new and have now done 115k miles with no problems.

I have noticed a small leak under the front drivers side wing in front of the wheel. Looks like some sort of pump under there with what looks like a overflow outlet and electrical block. Even after a long drive the leaking fluid is cold. Not sure if it is water or oil as it has no smell or feel? Its not a big leak but leaves a patch of about 3-4 inches on the drive over night.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Jack!

should be able to tell if its water or oil!? get some on your fnger and dip it in water. You'll see the water on your finger bead / not get wet if its oil.
Are you losing either fluid? Have you checked water and oil levels? If cold maybe just washer fluid from the light washers?

Is the 2.2 DTi Elite one of the Omegas that has a Diesel fired heater located in front of the drivers side front wheel?

If so it could be condensation/combustion products from the heater or it could be a coolant leak from the heater.

Its the 2.2 DTi Elite late 2003. Thanks all.. looks like it is water but not coolant as it is always cold. The leak seems to come from this pump like item in the front wheel well. It is in front of the drivers side wheel under the bumped a quite large piece of kit with a multi wire connector block going to it. There does not seem to be any loss of fluid from the normal things like radiator, or washer resovoir Never noticed this leak before but have had the aircon on a lot of late...which is working fine? Have tried to get a manual for the car but no luck for this model.

It can only be:
Oil,
or coolant from cooling system
or Water from washers
or Fuel
.. one of these must go down over time if you are losing some of it - unless its Aircon condenser run off, but not sure why that would be in front of the wheel / Bumper

As Andy H says, the disel powered coolant heater is located exactly where you describe.  It looks a like a fairly shiny bulbous thingee with a small bent exhaust pipe sticking out of the bottom. If it is running, you would be able to feel the waste heat from the exhaust and possibly hear it with the window open. I think this is unlikely that it is condensation due to the heater running as it should only kick in at about -5 degrees C IIRC. Therefore I guess coolant or diesel fuel. I think it is fed with fuel from from the engine fuel pump.

Thanks all... turned up the interior temp to 22 degrees so the air con was not running all the time and it seems to have stopped leaking ... well will keep an eye on things over the next couple of days. The fuel heater seems to run for about 5 mins from start up all the time?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

I suspect that  running at current summer temperatures is incorrect. Good job it only runs for 5 mins because on my car it halves the fuel consumption when it is running. I guess there must be a temperature sensor somewhere to  start it up and it is turning off as your coolant heats up. Sorry  I have no more suggestions.
