Moving crank 60* counterclockwise...?
« on: 30 August 2010, 21:28:33 »

Ok, I am seeing in my service manual that to do the timing belt I have to rotate the crank 60* counter clockwise before installing the timing tools. I am wanting to know... will the tool I install on the crank show if I am at 60*, or is this a guessing game? Maybe I am missing some kind of mark? I know right now I have it at at the proper marks.

No, that very wrong.

Do you have the locking kit?

Hm.... their site says there's no instruction manuals.

The only reason I need to set it to 60* (Manual says at 60*, valve to piston contact is impossible) is so I can do my cam & crank seals, as it looks like 2 of the cam seals were leaking at one time.

it does actually say in haynes book of lies
if the new belt is not being fitted straight away and the service tools are not being used to rotate the crankshaft backwards by about 60*
in case camshafts slip to avoid valve to piston damage

It's fair enough in that case. Turn the crank back after the belt has been removed for safety.

The 60 degrees is not critical so just turn it anticlockwise approximately 60 degrees by eye.

Do what you have to do with the cams then lock them back up with the wedges between the sprockets.

Re-fit the timing tool to the crank and bring it up clockwise to TDC No.1

Re-fit belt.

Don't turn the crank anticlockwise further then 60 degrees nor clockwise past TDC on no.1.

Ahhh, further info!

You dont need to do this for a belt change but, if doing other work you do.

Make sure you reset the cams before turning the crank again when re-assembling
