clunking sound when applying brakes
« on: 05 September 2010, 09:08:54 »

sorry, Im not mechanically minded here, but any ideas as to what the cause could be -and more importantly how easy and costly itll be to fix!-would be welcome. It seems to come from the front nearside wheel  and Ive only just noticed it (maybe because I normally have the CD player on so couldnt hear it before?). Doesnt seem to happen all the time but is getting worse and happens however gently or hard brakes are applied. Obviously being an auto brakes are used far more than with a manual and Im assuming the clunking sound on application is wear on the piston somewhere as the calliper bites? Dont really know much about  it (as is probably already apparent ;D :-[) so would appreciate some advice. Cheers.

It could be many causes. Pop the wheel off and give everything a wiggle to see if anything is obviously loose. Could be wear of the caliper pins or you've lost the anti-rattle springs or even the wishbone or ball joint failing.

When I got my first Omega the wishbone bushes were very soft. I was getting metal to metal contact (with an audible to clunk) when the brakes were applied.

i had this same problem on a old omega i used to have when u braked going backwards was ok then next time i used brakes going forwards there would be a clunk from front wheel. found out the caliper carrier bolts where not tight enough and the caliper was moving a little.  not sure if this helps.
