I seem to be losing coolant but I'm not convinced that the head baskets gone.  :-/

I seem not to have much pressure in the cooling system as when its at running temp you can undo the cap with just a small hiss but it sounds like the pressure is escaping from under the throttle body/plenum chamber as you can hear a grumble and a sound.  :question 

Any ideas please lads

There is normally a 'hiss' from under the Plenum, as thats where the breathers are... the movement of air through this plastic chamber gives off an audible noise.

Coolant loss could be the Heater Matrix.  Any signs (no matter how small) of dampness in the passenger footwell?  Misting of the windscreen on a cold morning is a sure sign

First things first... check the HBV. Follow the 2 heater matrix pipes back and you'll find it

Checked that carpets are bone dry, this hissing and grumbling is after you switch it off

Stat to block joint is a favourite....or oil cooler plate.

All if the bypass valve is ok

Ken, how much coolant are we talking about? When my HBV went, it lost 1/2 to 3/4 of the header tank in a short amount of time. Or is it just going down a bit?

Around 1.5/2ltr's a week/week & a half mate.

Im have the same problem as well.

No puddles ubder the car , no damp inside the car (that I have noticed) and the header tank always seems to have a good amount of pressure built up.

Yep that's the same as me, i think mine is the HBV as if I don't have the heating on water stays fine, turn it on hot or cold then the water drops.

Definitely start with the HBV - had two fail on me. The first would empty the header tank several times over 10-15 miles but then everything seemed to seal up with heat and it would run a distance without problems. Access to change it is 'interesting', to say the least.
