One of my key fobs will lock and unlock the car but won't release the boot. 

The car end of things must be OK because all three buttons work fine on the other key fob. 

I have replaced the battery and checked that the switch is OK, and that shorting across the switch with a paperclip also fails to work (either to open the boot or to light the key fob LED). 

Am I right in assuming that the fob PCB is burgered or could this be a programming issue?

I know nothing about them, but we know a man that does! Martin Imber rebuilds & repairs them, in your case probably just a microswitch. Send him a PM and see how you get on.

If the switch contacts are ok, then check the battery holder connections are still secure, if one of the contacts has broken away it may not be immediately obvious so look closely. the connectors can be easily resoldered with a steady hand or as said Martin Imber is your man if you are not able to do it yourself

Thanks guys.  I have PM'd Martin. 

I had bought one of the key repair kits from the Bay.  It comes with a new key fob case, a battery and three replacement microswitches for you to solder in yourself.  The key fob case is OK but not as good quality as the VX original, and it doesn't have a transparent window so you lose the feedback of the LED flash to reassure you the button has worked. 

Anyway, the cost of the DIY kit is more than Martin charges to do the job for you.  So I wish I had discovered Martin before wasting money on the kit.  You live and learn!

I bought two of these to refurbish mine & I just drilled A 2mm hole in the new case top where the original 'window' was, it works a treat!

A big thank you to Martin Imber, who just repaired my duff key fob in no time flat.  And at a tiny fraction of the £90 that my local Vx dealer wanted for a replacement key.
