Change Timing Belt without special tools?
« on: 15 September 2010, 20:35:17 »

Hi

Is it possible to tension and clock the belt whitout the special tools, i'm thinking of the Timing Gauge KM-800-20.
Isn't the marking on the rear beltcover sufficient for clocking the belt?

The markings are not horific, but not accurate enough tbh.

You'll need a locking kit.  'Experts' can do it without, but for the cost, you'd be daft to attempt the job without one.

I dont think there is anyone anywhere more expert on the v6 engine than Mark DTM, and Im sure he wouldnt even contemplate doing the job without the proper locking/setting tools. ;)

so the crank to cams will just be a best guess, the timing kit locates on the crank pulley & uses the water pump as a reference.

Broomies Mate enclosed expert with quotation marks, ie those experts who think they know what they're doing!  :y

No, nobody can do it properly without the locking/timing kit.

This is getting silly now....

Yes you can use the marks on the case, but all you are getting is an approximation, they are not accurate, but will get you in the ball park.

Use just those, and you will find the car down on power and economy, and often running generally rough.

To do this properly you DO need the the proper locking / timing kit.
