2.6 not running
« on: 14 September 2010, 22:55:36 »

On holiday in Devon, about 5 minutes from the accomodation and i the EML comes on, and i lose power, no odd noises just low power, i.e floor it at 40 and not a lot happens, just slowly speed up.  Think to myself i'll pull over in the next layby and then the engine cuts.  no bang or anything just cuts out.  coast onto a grass verge and turn the key, grating noise. :(  RAC come out and diagnose a top end problem, with the cams most likely, tow me to a garage who estimate £2k without even looking at the engine for new belt and gubbins, new gaskets, skimmed heads and new cams all round, i tell them dont bother i'll have the RAC flatbed it home next week at the end of my holiday, in the meantime i've bought a cheap as chips '96 1.2 corsa that's as slow as a one legged dog on tranquilizers.  but anyway, when i get home i'm gonna investigate properly and fix it myself if possible.

So any ideas what it could be?

Timing belt was tight and only 17k old btw.

Hell fire for that kind of money i'd expect them to faith heal it :o normally find it benificial to at least look at an engine in order to diagnose its problems.

you say the belt was 17K old how about tensioners etc?

Bit more info about car could help more :y

Cant tell you the error codes till later in the week, but there are two or three from memory.

tensioners etc were all changed with belt.  vauxhall kit.

2003 2.6 auto saloon, 95500 miles cambelt at 79k.

did accidentally put about 3 litres of two stoke/petrol mix in 300 miles previous - makes no differnce according to RAC fella.

OK, whats broken is the cambelt tensioner - the one at the top between the two banks.  the ball bearings have failed and gone everywhere.

anyway, the drivers bank (1&2) timing is ok, but the passenger bank (3&4)- the cam 4 timing was about an inch different to cam 3.  i have reset it all to the correct timing, but how do i know whether there is any internal valve damage?

There more than likely will be bent valves :( Put a new cambelt kit on, time it up correctly then do a compression test

Agreed but turn it over a few times by hand before you do the compression test, if you get any resistance you're hitting a valve. If no resistance felt then go for the compression test :y

New belt etc fittted, turnrned over by hand.

Cams get halfway round, then wont move any further.

So I have bent valves.

Best course of action?
Cost of fixing, and difficulty?

Don't you do that whilst fitting a cambelt kit anyway ::)

You'll be better off with a second hand head as the valve guides may well have split. Its not too bad a job tbh ;)
