Front spring sizes
« on: 07 April 2010, 17:23:07 »

Ordered 2 springs off a site on ebay - arrived today - one is 373mm in length, the other is 351mm :-/

Having never ever taken a spring off before I'm guessing that they should be the same length - so what length should they be?

Any help/answers would be appreciated :y

According to the guy who sold me these springs they are "HANDED" which means, for my car, one side is higher than the other - anybody know if this is true or not :y

SMP LW0221 & LW0218 - thats whats printed on the boxes.
He could be right as I've checked other listings on ebay and they are selling them as RHS or LHS.

I suppose the only way of knowing is to whip the springs off and check the heights. :-/

Just made some checks......there appears to be a difference of opinion across suppliers.....some list 2 different part numbers for left and right (e.g. KYB)....others a single part number (e.g. Sachs Boge).

I am struggling with the idea that one is longer than the other in this case though and cant find any techncial evidence to sudgest what is the norm.

I do know that when ever I ahev removed springs or fitted say Irmscher ones that they have been the same length

Cannot give free length value but both should be the same.  If springs are described as handed means one is wound clockwise and and the other, anti clockwise.  Rare, but not unheard of.  Not on omega though, as far as I know.

Thanks for the input guys - I'll be taking the springs off over the week-end which should tell me wether the springs are the right size altho one of the springs has a big chunk missing which may complicate matters.
The guy who sold me the springs says he's no problem with replacing them if they are the wrong size.
Anyway will update this thread next week sometime on how I get on :y

get the seller to send you a copy ofthe manufacturers application catalogue.  i've tried to find the SMP (which i think is the standard motor parts) catalogue to no avail.  This will prove to you the parts are correct.  I'd also check to see if there is a number stamped on the spring - no telling that what is in the box is the same as what the box says.

without that I would not even get my hands dirty taking the old ones off: they cannot be the correct part...

Update

Finally got round to fitting the springs and the ebay guy was right - well sort of.
N/s (which was the broken side) was the shorter - fitted ok but the lower part of the spring loop was sllightly different.
O/s was longer but comparing what came off the car to the one I bought there was a slight difference in height but put that down to a tired spring.
I think what came off the car were the original springs as they were colour coded brown/brown.
So the springs are definitely "handed" as the guy said - hope this may help somebody but it may be different for a pre-facelift saloon :y
