3.2 auto to manual convertion
« on: 30 September 2010, 20:55:27 »

I have just converted a 3.2 to manual, now the TC and spanner light are on, is there any wiring that can be done to put these lights out and make the TC work again?

I'm guessing the ABS/TC and engine ECUs need to be coded for a manual setup. Needs a Tech 2 session. :y

Surely the TC won't work with a manual!? Tech2 session will just turn it off completely.

TC=Traction control, I assume.

why is the traction control linked to the gearbox anyway? :o

Gearbox ECU, ABS/TC and Engine ECU are linked by a common CAN bus so they can exchange information in real-time.

I would imagine the ABS/TC is mapped differently between auto and manual setups to suite the different drivetrain characteristics. There may even be a control protocol between them (to prevent a gearchange when traction control is active, for example).

Either way, I know ABS/TC and Engine ECU are both programmed with the type of transmission.

Switched my 3l 99elite to manual last year with no traction problems must be some thing with the later models.

Yeah I have converted a few diesel omegas in the past with no problem, I thought something else was wrong but I ask a guy who converted a 2.6 and he also had the same problems, this is the fault code that is coming up because of the convertion

Is the auto gearbox ecu still connected to the loom?

Ok. The gearbox ECU will be doing its' nut because it's not connected to a gearbox any more and it's asking the engine ECU to report a problem.

I think you will still get problems with the ECU removed. The other ECUs will expect it to be on the CAN bus and will raise a fault if they can't see it.

The proper solution is to reconfigure the engine and ABS/TC ECUs.

I believe non-DBW models used a more primitive form of signalling which probably doesn't detect the missing ECU.

Certainly on earlier ones, you can short a wire to fool it into thinking the gearbox is happy. Similar for MID.  But the correct way, as Kevin Wood states, is to reprogram the engine ecu, ABS ecu and MID/CCRT/GID/CID
