Decceleration vibration (unbalanced propshaft?)
« on: 24 September 2010, 19:19:01 »

Hi People

I have raised this subject before (a few months ago), and I did get a few replies, thankyou very much, however ive still not got to the bottom of my problem.

Ive got an 04 2.2GLS, everything seems fine with the car apart from a mysterious rumble. Its probably best if i list the points about the rumble:

- The rumble sounds like a "transmission tunnel" rumble
- It can be felt through the front seats at certain speeds
- The rumble is only when deccelerating
- Being in or out of gear makes no difference
- Clutch in or out of gear makes no difference
- The rumble is deccelerating between 55-40mph

I have had the car for four months and done 3000 miles in it, im not sure if it is getting worse or not (these things are tricky to judge), although im beginning to wonder if a slight vibration can be felt when the car is on a bumpy road and "on the rise" (sitting low on the suspension in a dip).

I have taken the car to a friendly independant local garage and they cant find a problem, but im sure GM wouldnt have made a car with that noise. Ive got my first child on the way (due in December) and the car needs to be a reliable family runaround. I would be really grateful if anybody can suggest a checklist of things I can take to the garage and ask them to check. From basic logic I think it may be an unbalanced propshaft, is this usual?, has anyone else had a rumble on a petrol 2.2GLS saloon?.

Thanks for any help people, both me and my little boy (as of December) would be really grateful  :)

If you think its an unbalanced propshaft, try a large jubilee clip round the shaft as a balance weight and rotate it then try it to improve/worsen the vibration - to try and rule out/confirm propshaft inbalance.

Firstly check the front and rear prop donuts for loose bolts and signs of splits. Secondly check the centre prop bearing for play and signs of damage. If these are all fine then move on to prop balancing.

Oscarfish I've taken the liberty of copying this from your previous thread, may save a bit of repetition:   :y

I have taken it to a local mechanic I trust and they have done the following:

1) swapped wheels front to back and side to side - no effect on either problem
2) checked all wheel bearings - no effect on either problem
3) checked for warped disks etc - no effect on either problem
4) checked all is as it should be and the car has been in a smash
5) checked the prop shaft couplings etc - no problem

The only thing we can think is an unbalanced prop, or dodgy centre bearing (although on inspection it seems fine).

Can anybody offer advice on either the tracking or vibration issue?.
