Hi all

X reg 2.0 16v omega estate gets really misted up even with the fans on. Particularly noticeable on cool damp days. I don't have the air recirculation on but maybe it is stuck? I have to open the windows for a while to clear, which is not so good when it is chucking it down here in Wales as it usually is! Any advice appreciated other than move!!

You might just have a leak from the heater system water somewhere, mate, in all seriousness. are you losing any water??

Have you checked the cabin filter & made sure the scuttle is unblocked as per the maintenance guide?

I think it's got to be your scuttle drain, as already mentioned,good maintenance guide,fairly easy fix, so well worth a check out

And while you are there check that the recirc flap is in fact working.  Its at the bottom of the hole where the scuttle drain lives.

The estates are prone to misting. I have always had a problem with mine and find that the only way to clear it properly is to have the air con on. Check the scuttle tray and replace the pollen filter as this may help. I also ensure that my windscreen is kept very clean and on the side windows i use an Anti mist product that you can pick up from Halfords. The downside to this product is that it can leave a smearing on the inside of your windows hence i don't recommend it on the front windscreen. You can also try leaving the load cover open as this will allow air to move more freely inside.

My windscreen mists up easily without the air-con on as well. My scuttle drains are clear (it was worse when they weren't) and misting is always worse when you switch from air-con on to off

I would think that recirculating the air without air-con on would just move humid air round the cabin, so wouldn't solve the problem

But aircon dehumidifies air (because the water in the air condenses on the cold aircon unit - which is why a/c always has a drain to the outside of the car) - it's better to dehumidify air that's already been dehumidified than draw fresh humid air in and dehumidify that.. one way the air gets gradually less and less humid and the other, it doesn't.

I seem to remember Mark DTM posted a procedure that reset the air recirculation flaps some time ago. This cured the problem for me but I can't remember the procedure. Anyone?

He doesn't say whether he has a/c or not, you are right about the recirculation otherwise, of course

are the cubby holes at the back clear?  or full of junk, as these are part of the airflow iirc.

try and air the car if you can (on your drive) i left all the windows open on mine all day whilst i was home on a dry sunny day as i had a slight misting problem and now all is well.

Back to the condensation. I have aircon but it packed up in May. Probably just needs a recharge?
I keep the scuttle drains clear but will recheck. I will check that the recirculation flap is working and that the cubby holes in the rear are clear. I am not losing any water.

As I said above, there is a way to reset the starting position of the air recirculation flaps by holding certain buttons in together but I can't remember the sequence. I think Jimbob is going to be posting up a "How To" in the maintenance section soon.
