Removal of locking wheel nuts - without key
« on: 14 October 2010, 14:13:17 »

Ok so my key bust, £50 for new one - I don't think so!

Read lots of ways to remove them and saw lots of tools advertised.
Because the vauxhall nuts have the spinning collars a lot of methods don't work.

This Is how I did it and it was a doddle.

tightened the other four studs as tight as I could to relieve some pressure.

I got an old 24mm socket and whacked it on over the spinning collar

Then I welded the socket to the stud through the drive hole on the socket, just a couple of tacks is sufficient.

Then you can undo the stud and drop it in the vice give it good bang and you should be able to get your socket off to use again.

I covered the wheel with some old plywood to make sure I didn't get any splatter on wheel or tyre.

Job done.   ;D ;D ;D

Blimey!

Unusual, but obviously effective.....................

I bought a bolt extractor for rounded off bolt heads from Halfrauds for £8, and tacked the collar onto the nut with a mig.
Then the extractor just takes it off as if it was a bolt with a ****** head on it!!

Job done. :y

Slight mountain out of a molehill :P

The guys at my local tyre place broke off the spinning collars with a hammer and screwdriver in about 2 seconds, hammer on a tight socket and off they came.

I have located a suitably sized nut extractor with a reverse griping thread.  It wasn't cheap but it was quick & effective.
