noisy pump on start up

i have a 2 ltr petrol r reg omega and on first starting there is a pump which runs for about one minute then switches off it is located on the nsf wing. does any one know what it is

That will be your secondary air injection (SAI) pump.  Only used during cold-start, and not essential even then.  Do a search for the above terms and you'll find a wealth of solutions for getting rid of the noise.  :y

As said .. SAI ... pull the fuse for it... F49 according to Haynes

Fuse 29b in this diagram (I think :)  )
