Closest member to replace camcover gaskets?
« on: 15 October 2010, 16:11:47 »

Ahoy there.

Is there anyone within 100 miles of my location that could fix my oil leak?  I'm fairly certain it's the camcover gaskets, as I can get oil on my fingers by touching the drivers side front from the outside.  I can also see the oil collecting on the drivers side above the sump.  The passengers side probably isn't leaking, but I'm guessing it would be prudent to replace those at the same time?

I've had a look at the maintenance guide and tbh I wouldn't be confident doing it myself with no previous experience.

I'm willing to travel and obviously will pay for parts and labour, also flexible time wise.  If there's no one available to help me out, what should I expect price wise from an independent garage?

Thanks  :)

trust me its piss easy

get it done soon as when mine went drivers side oil got in my aultinator and fryed that as well

ps drivers side is the easyest side to do as long and you take your time and dont drop a spanner down the the inlet hole or do up the cam cover bolts up goriller style you only nip em up

it wont be a problem as you could do quite afew times for pratice long before the cost of the labour bill you will get

Yeah I've had a look at the maintenance guide, whilst it doesn't look terribly difficult I really don't want to get stuck half way through it.  I'd rather take it to a willing member and pay the labour and hopefully observe and learn so I can have a stab at it in the future.

So, no one offering their services on OOF?  :-[

If it comes to taking it to a garage, how much should I expect to pay?

I was quoted £241.00 quid by a garagae for my old R REG CDX. But I would suggest that you buy a cheap set of gaskets first and try doing it yourself....... If you need to replace them again  at least you would have  done it first time with a cheap set  for the test run.

theres not rally anything to get stuck with doing it

other than relising you lost that one spaner you need or socket as ushally happens lol

basicly you just pull of the plenum and inlet manfold
stuff some rags in hols so you dont drop anything down hole

undo cam covers pull em off clean em up and any oil in plug holes

fit new o rings around bolt holes and gasket and there not really gaskets rather a rubber seal that just pushes in

and put a few blobs of the black sealent on coruners as per pic in guide

left one is easy drivers side on passanger side have slid it under crap/wireing  so just watch you dont pinch or drop gasket out

do em up and stuff every thing back

job done

re cheap gaskets dont dother get the vx ones

9 out of ten times you dont need the parts listed in guide as most can be reused fine
the ones you need are there tiny o ring that go where the bolts are 8 each side there penneys for geuine vx ones

and the cam cover gaskets thers two on each bank

there about 30quid for the two for one side so 60 for both sides

worst that likely to hapen is you pinch one and it dont seal and your end up spend another 30 quid

you really have got to be a kwik fit moron fitter to mess it up

then again they could proberly mange to screw it up lol

its really no diferent that doing a 8v astra one thats siting on the top they only take a couple of mins to do

litraly

only diference with omega is the crap above you have to un bolt to get at thats all it a pain in the ass and it gives the garage a chance to charge you a foutune

if you can read and can change a spark plug you can do it your sel

Thanks for the offers chaps, I've pm'd Pete as he seems closest to me.

Whilst the camcover gasket change itself looks straight forward to me, I'm just worried about messing up all the hose connections, in particular (de)pressurizing the fuel line which I have no experience with.

Whilst taking the plenum and rocker covers off, is there anything else worth changing that would be easy at the same time?

Thanks.
