auto gearbox again!!
« on: 16 October 2010, 10:27:25 »

just drove over to mums, autobox has come up on screen and it was slipping a bit, jacked it up, undid nut, topped up and lowered to let excess run out. took for a drive and its stopped slippin but it seems like only getting in 3 gears. how much fluid should be in there because ive only been able to get about 5 litres in there and i thought it was 6. could i have put the gear selector back wrong when i cleaned it

think its 9L or something in total, but a lot of it sits in the torque converter . I'd be tempted to drop the sump, see whats going on in there, and check condition of thrust washer. Any gearbox codes stored?

You did have it running while topping up? :y

IME it took about 6 or 7 litres when I changed mine. I didn't measure how much ended up on the garage floor or in my bouffant though.  ;D

If you have had the selector switch off, did you adjust its position when you put it back on. You use an 1/8th inch drill from memory to do the adjustment.

Might be worth checking that before opening up the front sump looking for bits of a broken washer.

Also as kevin says did you check the oil level with the oil warm, engine running and car level?

drove to mums, engine was hot. checked gearbox level while up on 1 side, and engine still running. started coming out after about 200ml so when i lowered i lost about the same as i put in. went for a drive and gears changed ok but i noticed it wouldnt go above 3rd gear. last friday i dropped both sumps and i reckon about 7 litres came out in all. clean both sumps, put new filter on and new gaskets and replaced. put 5 litres in and started the engine let run till engine got to 80 then topped up, got another litre in then lowered and let excess fall out while running and jacked up and put nut back on.  when i cleaned the selector switch i took apart and cleaned all the crap out and put back on in the same position i took it off. no gearbox codes stored. so i must have to take the selector off again and make sure its in the correct position, would this be why its not using all the gears ??

right. i have now reset the gear selector switch as instructed in thread. when i pull away it gets to 2nd gear then revvs up and doesnt go into 3rd unless i push the ac pedal hard, then the same when i need to get into the next gear. before i cleaned the 2 sumps all gears were working ok but was a small thud into 3rd, but now is definatly worse since i did a fluid change. there is definatly not enough fluid in there as i could only get 5 litres in after draining about 7 litres out. and if i try to get anymore in it just comes out. i didnt notice anything in the sumps except thick sludge and no broken washers. any ideas?

Just a thought, but when you did a fluid change, did you also clean / replace the transmission filter ?.  :-?

yes i did and the gaskets. the fluid was so brown and old and in the bottom of the sumps was quite thick so possibly it has never been done before as the gaskets were welded to the gearbox and i had a hell of a job scrapping them off. where would i find the solenoid or solenoids, what does it look like and what do i need to do to change??

Rich,

You may have a bit of a time searching for it on here, but there was photo of where the part is, though can't remember if it was part of a 'maintenance' thread ??.
