From cold take off the resevoir cap and check the coolant is clean. As long as it is start the car and check that there is a flow in the tank to check the waterpump is working. Were the fans kicking in?

Airlock possibly
Start car, cap off, heater on full heat, squeeze the rad hoses a few times when it starts getting warm.
