2.2 Cam Chain
« on: 28 October 2010, 13:20:36 »

Hi all,

My first post here, so hello!

I'm going to look at a 2002 Omega 2.2 this weekend. I used to have a Vectra and I'm not actually looking for an Omega, they appear to be pretty good value for money. Anyway, when I had the Vec, I heard of the Cam Chain snapping on the 2.2 because of a problem with oil not lubricating the chain. Anyone know any more info about this and if this is something I can look out for?

Also, anyone want to give me some tips so I don't buy a complete dog?

Cheers!
Dave

if the motor code starts with a z it will be chain (after 2001 i think) if it starts with a y it will be a belt, usually will have a sticker on the slam panel if it's belt for service intervals e.t.c. as to regards with the timing chain snapping i believe that was not on this motor but the se motor which didn't come out in the omega where as this would be a ev motor? as for checking for dogs i'm relatively new to omega's but if i was looking at one i would be checking steering straight braking e.t.c and ofcourse service history, most omega's have history as they are a fairly conservative exec car so if this is lost i would look deeper into it

All 2.2 petrol Omega's have a cambelt. The 2.2 DTI is a chain.
The cambelt along with waterpump should be changed every 40k miles or 4 years.

I stand corrected! :-[ so it's a mine field out there am i correct in thinking that the z motor is an alloy block as opposed to the y motor which is a cast block :question if not where lies the difference!

The difference was in EURO norms y22 is Euro3 and Z22 is Euro4. Think only small difference was in ECU programming

All Omega Petrols are belts.

2.2 and UK 2.5 diesels are chains.

All Omega belts are 40k, ignore any printed or verbal advice suggesting otherwise. For 2.0/2.2 do waterpump at same time.

Great thanks for the replies. I thought the 2.2 petrol was a chain!

Always found looking for cars such a ball ache. When I was looking for a Vectra a few years ago, all I heard was "Oh yeah it had a belt at 80k". Wrong interval and it didn't have the rollers/tensioners changed  >:(

Cheers!

Indeed, the Omega 2.2 petrol and the Vectra (and I think it went in some Astras/Zaffys) 2.2 are very different engines
