Kangeroo forwards but great backwards!
« on: 29 October 2010, 19:49:20 »

I have picked up an old omega 2.5td, with a problem which is driving me nuts. The car will not drive forward above say 10mph without violent lurching. The engine revs like normal in neutral and the engine is normal in reverse.
The engine warning light always goes out, which could be the first time I have wanted a warning light to stay on. The accelerator pedal sensor has been dismantled  and is perfect, shame. The ecu may have a seperate map for reverse  which may explane the problem and means the ecu is bust. If you have ever come across anything like this or have any ideas that would be a great help.
Problem solved thank the lord, two great big bundles of wires just behind the battery had rubbed against each other great design, just hope no damage to rest of electrics.

First of all you should do a paperclip test.
If the ecu was bust the engine wouldn't start.
The pedal sensor could be the problem if you say it's been appart.

Hmm would tend to suspect torque reaction causing a wire somewhere to short, engine when going forwards would be tilted very slightly to one side and the other way in reverse?
only thing i can think of if as you say the pedal sensor is good, could try cleaning the injector pump internals with diesel magic trick?

Are you reversing at over 10mph?? Maybe the problem only happens over 10mph in reverse but you never actually achieve it??

this was the exact problem we had with SWMBO's auto Hyundai a few years back.

It was something I'd never have thought of, I even went to the extent of having the gearbox refurb'd & it was still like it. A local garage sussed it in the end.  :y
