Has anyone replaced this to save weight/add performance?

If so where did you get the staright thru pipe work to replace it?

Changing a rear silencer shouldn't do anything noticable to performance. Maybe tweak the engine note, but not much more. If you're talking about a complete straight through exhaust system right up to the manifold, then I've never heard anyone on here doing that to a Turbo Weasel. V6s yes, plenty of modding on them. I would be very interested to hear of anyone that has done to a TD, though.

Anyone who wants more power for their TD generally goes down the chip route.

Bonus is also you don't end up binning the cats, then find that lovely stainless steel pipework you spent all your money on has made the car fail on emissions. Which is always handy  ;)

thanks for reply.

am doing chip route as well.

reason for asking was weight improvement and the fact that any car silencer is also a baffle trap with air being restricted in its passage thru. Usually the freeflowing the exhaust the better the engine performs, accepting that it may be a minimal gain.

Don't know about back box but there are cases where the cat has been removed. It seems the the emmisions tolerance for the diesel is pretty high and MOT failure doesn't come into it.

Yes, Ive heard that too. Not contradicting myself but yes, you can remove the cat. Just didnt want to give the guy categorical (no pun intended) advice to remove it, as its something Ive never done personally. But you are totally correct, Kneepad.

Going down the chip route will be good, definitely. Have someone I know will be very interested in hearing your progress/what chip you use, etc. Much black smoke has been spoken of, after chipping; hence my concerns relating to mot.

GSX, sounds like you're pretty on the ball. You're correct about the gains with a different exhaust, and also realsitic that it wont be huge a difference.

I would suggest do the exhaust before chipping, purely as the reduced back pressure may need to be accounted for when it comes to the reprogrammed ECU.

Best of luck, look forward to hearing progress!  :y :y

lol did mine years ago when the back box had a hole in it,
I simply cut the uncorroded tube off the old back box then welded it to some replacement pipe, got a bit left over so created twin exits either side of the car, looks good been on 4 years now, sounds excellent when full boost is reached, couldnt tell you whether or not it gave any power gains as mine is pretty played with anyway, but it weighs less than 25percent of the old rear silencer!!!
