We have decided to pull that power sounder off the car we are going to do the dash tomorrow.

This could easily be misconstrued. I'm sure TB reads every word of the threads.

Any member who replies to your post is doing it in your best interest.    :y

Thank you everyone for your help and advice so far.

Update the car is now running without the power sounder unit. Now this doesn't appear to be what was on fire.

I have still got no instrument illumination?  :(

All fuses have been checked and are all intact. Any ideas?
Does anyone now if there would be a relay for this anywhere?

I don't know if this is relevant but I was once the passenger in an Astra when the ignition switch failed. A surprising amount of smoke quickly streamed out of the steering column shroud and up in front of the instruments.

I got the driver to switch it off quickly and the smoke stopped. The AA came and towed us to a garage where the switch was replaced.

I don't know if the Omega has separate circuits from the ignition switch for gearbox & dash :-/

I'd say the smoke was either from the instrument cluster, the fuse box, or possibly (because of the timing of the smoke) the auto transmission module which lives in the same sort of area.

You'll only know when you start to investigate behind the dash...
