Intermittent brake lights
« on: 22 October 2010, 10:20:14 »

My brake lights I've just realised only operate intermittently. About once in every 3 pedal pushes .. regardless of how hard I push.

I presume it's the switch on the pedal bracket. Has anyone else had this problem & is it an easy replacement?

Yes, its a faulty brake switch. I have changed mine and they now work fine. (thanks to one of the members off here). It is located behind the brake pedal. You have to take the card board cover and the heater vent by the pedals to access it. Bit awkward to get at!! If you have cruise control it will be a 4 pin switch.

Switch is most likely candidate.

Fiddly to change.

check the cable also where it enters the side of the boot..  it can be broken with time..

I can report that this problem was solved by replacing the brake light switch. Very differcult to get to the switch. Two tips for anyone else with the same problem. You can only fit a new switch in by:
1. Having the brake pedal pushed down (i.e. you need another person to do this)
2. Pulling the switch actuating pin all the way out so you can slide the red locking collar fully out (otherwise the locking tabs can't move inwards as the red collar is in the way).

The 2.5TD brake switch has 4 electrical connections & is part number 90563455.
