Help - i think the inevitable has happened!!
« on: 08 November 2010, 09:48:21 »

After droppin my lad off at school this morning ive pulled up outside the house and have lost all drive.
2.5 auto, none of the gears will engage and the park brake wont work either. engine turns over fine and as normal but just dont have any drive.
have been having problems with what could possible be worn bearings in the diff - see previous posts for details.
have breakdown recovery on way out shortly to see if they can pinpoint the prob but for now does anyone have any ideas???

check that the lever hasn't fallen off the auto gearbox shifter. The one from the base of the lever to the actual transmission.

for a diff to become so worn that it loses drive, it'll have been making noises loud enough to wake the dead for tens of thousands of miles IMO

well what can i say apart from a "certain colour of flag" breakdown are a waste of time. just had them out now and he sat in the car, moved the gear lever up and down a few times and said "it could be this or it could be that" im not 100% sure but i can take you to a garage and even if it was a gearbox problem i cant do anything at the side of the road!!
Thanks for nothing - he certainly earning his wages today!!
im getting it down to the local garage this afternoon so will mention the point about the gear lever, thanks for that.
cheers

or try the big "what gear am I in" switch on the side of the gearbox.

does the idle change when you move the lever - like it has gone into gear ?

electrically confirms that you are in the gear selected.

Have a read through this ...... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1267956397 they're expensive to replace with a new one, but apparently generally respond to a clean.  ;) :y

ok thanks,
failing that, do you think it could be anything else?
is it possible it could of had something to do with the noise ive been getting from the rear end over the last few mths?
possible diagnosis from previous posts all point towards the diff / driveshaft.
thx

Do the gear selector lights move in conjunction with the gear lever position?

Ie does the neutral light coincide with neutral gear lever position, same for drive, and so on for all gears...?

Now that you mention that particular symptom ......  ::) could be!

Try Bury Salvage, he had a few Omegas in a few months ago if you need bits,
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=bury+salvage&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=salvage&hnear=Bury,+Greater+Manchester&cid=11983036529691141666 or Auto Save around the corner is a good yard, no idea what he has in at the moment though.  :y  :y  :y

been onto bury salvage and they have a w-reg 2.5 in and wants £100 for the diff or £30 for the d/shaft although he didnt say if it was an auto or not - will this make a difference and is this an ok price to pay for these parts if thats the prob?
i did get a reply last week from someone who had a diff going but they wanted £70 i think but then it would have to be posted coz i cant get to it and the garage wants £100 for fittin it.  :'( :'(

So, presumably, if engine running and box in drive, the prop will turn but the drive shafts and wheels will not.

Can the prop be seen turning under the car?
