the guide for changing an ar25 to ar35 seems to have disappeared, does anyone know what has happened to it?

To be honest its straight forward enough (gawd knows i know!) just remember when changing the bellhousing over to the AR35 keep the front end of the box pointing upwards a bit (i propped mine up on 2 old tyres) so the guts dont drop out, best way is to slacken the bolts a little then tap b/housing with a nylon mallet until you see its free from the box, but have the AR25 b/housing ready first so you can pop it straight on, hope that helps a bit.

In fact, we could do with some photos for a new, improved guide if you get the chance. 

Remember the cardinal rule of changing auto gearboxes. Always unbolt the torque converter from the driveplate and remove it with the gearbox. On reassembly, Ensure the torque converter is fully home on the input splines to the gearbox (it should go so far back that it scrapes on the back of the bell housing) before offering the gearbox up to the engine.

Failure to so so can result in the torque converter getting crushed or the bushing and seal where it locates into the gearbox getting damaged.

Hello everyone,
I'm having a bit of difficulty lowering the gearbox.

THis is what I have doen so far:
removed propshaft
inlet manifold,
two started motor bolts
two main bolts at the top
two large torque bolts, and 5 smaller t-bolts,
exhaust mounting bolt,
two big mounting bolts,
release the selector switch,
removed 3 or 4 electrical connectors,
2 hose pipes

placed a trolley-Jack underneath the front,
andother jack at the rear,

but this is the problem, that the bell housing seems to be detached but not letting go at the front somewhere, but i can't see where, i can see the two little dowls as the is a little bit of a gap between the bell housing and the engine.

any ideas?

do i need to unbolt the torque converter, if so how do i do that whilst the bell housing is still attached?

You need to undo flyplate to TC bolts (6 on all, except 2.5TD that only has 3).

There is a rubber bung that allows access to these (turn the crank over to rotate to next bolt). Or starter motor hole.

Once these are undone, pull entire gearbox BACKWARDS a couple of inches (or more), then drop. Dont just drop, as that isn't helpful to TC's health

I didn't think about that bolts that hold that TC onto the flywheel, and tried the drop the gearbox, but it would drop a few inches at the back and maybe a coupl of inches at the front but not really let go.  Is this likely to have damaged anything?

I'll definately try to take some pics, not got a camera, but will use my phone cam.

And by all accounts you must turn engine the correct way or something ?? could be upset??

I was going to say to replace the g/box crossmember before unbolting the t/c to take the weight off of it, but perhaps im too late.

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't been able to update sooner, didn't have much time since we hit the wards full time, I'm a medical student.

Anyway, I managed to get the old ar25 out with just one trolley jack and few axle stands, you really need two trolleys.  Swapped over the bell housing onto the petrol ar25 i bought, popped it all back up, filled with oil and it seem to be running.  Took it out for a drive through the heavy traffic of south london, mind you it was late in the evening and the gearbox was shifting sort of ok but then it got progressively worse; it wouldn;t move off the line very quickly, very slow to accelerate, and eventually just stopped!  Managed to get the car pushed to one side and then waited for the AA, whilst waiting, noticed the flood of brand new red dexron 3 under the car.  It seems that the seal that cost about a fiver was already gone and the oil just poured out of it.

I didn't have a camera but tried to take a few pics with my phone as a couple of admins asked me if i could take some pics, how do I send them to you?

As for the car, i've given up now, must have spent in the region of 12-15hrs on it in the cold and rain, have decided to sell the damn thing, it has mot till around march, tax till the new year and its the cdx with heated seats and stuff if anyone on here if interested, good engine with roughtly 150k miles, nice paint, not peeling off, though bit of rust on the rear arches etc.
