Gearbox level/drain plug
« on: 12 November 2010, 14:59:40 »

Hello, can anyone tell me where exactly the level/ drain plug is on the ar35 gearbox? Is it on the drivers side? Thanks!

yes, drivers side, 1/2 way up the sump - its a filler / level plug, not drain, so not at the low point  :y

same size bolt as engine oil sump  :y

Beware they can be horrifically tight and are easily roundable, if the sump is coming off for an ATF change it may be easier( if a little messier) to drop the sump and then deal with the plug otherwise lube it and take it easy with a good fitting socket/spanner.

If you feel the spanner starting to give then gently tap on a 1/2" ring spanner as it is 0.3mm down in size :y

Oops. I have to admit that I managed to round off the above mentioned bolt yesterday. Was using a 12 sided 13mm socket, oh for a 6 sided! Too far gone for the 1/2 inch socket and the mole grips are just tearing it up further. How easy is it to drop off the sump and how much ATF should I be looking to buy for refill. Presume I will need to get a new sump gasket as well as the new bolt? The car is an X reg 2.0l 16v and has done 162k so I think the oil change will do it good. Also is there a filter to change for the ATF? Cheers.

I got about 5.5 litres our of mine. I think total capacity from dry is 8.8 litres. From the ar35 anyway. Yours being a 2.0 litre I don't know gearbox you will have.

There's 2 dumps on the ar35. The big one has 16 10mm bolts. The smaller sump a little less. Once bolts were out it was stuck, so I encouraged it with a hammer, be careful though as the sump I'd obviously full of oil.

I tried a small stilson. Unfortunately, not quite enough room. Regarding my earlier post. Is there a filter I should be replacing if I drop the sump off?
