I broke down this morning, temp went up, red light came on, some steam but not a lot. AA man said it sounds like not much compression, and having had a headgasket /bent valve session 15K miles ago I was not happy. I have just managed to dismantle things, and it looks as if the water pump shaft has snapped, allowing the belt to slip. When I took the cover off the belt was hanging loose. 





I changed the water pump 50K miles ago, and the belt and tensioners 15K miles ago. I didn't tension the new belt up to tight, just to the new position, so I'm a bit surprised it went. All bits were new from Autovaux.

Does this look like I need new valves/guides in the head again.

In a nutshell, yes

The waterpump should be changed everytime you change the belt and tensioners.

50k miles is too long for a replacement pump , I change mine every 30k or 4 years along with belt regardless of mileage, Im suprised after all the work you did previously that you didnt change it, after the horse has bolted and all that I know...

I may have a 2.2 coming in Ken if you just want to do a head swop? It'll be easier than re-doing the 16 valves and guides again!

Sounds the best idea, it was only the inlet valves last time. This time who knows how many. Could be 1, more likely all 16.

I'm having rather an expensive month car wise. The alternator packed up last week, again on the middle of the M60. Mr AA man diagnosed it for me, no he couldn't change it, but he knew a nearby service station that  could. I mistakenly believed I would get charged £100 and be on the road again soon. (sucker )

The service station couldn't be bothered, it would be the afternoon before they started and it might be the next day befor they got the part. And he wouldn't give me a price.To speed things along, I took the old one off to let him order a replacement. He did and still didn't give me a price.

Eventually they refitted the replacement, and I got a bill for £170, and they kept the old one saying if I wanted it it would cost me a further £60.

I walked into that one. Its not a long job changing a 4 pot alternator, and some garages are good, my wife had a fuel filter changed on her corsa. The bill inc parts was £21.
