Problem - misfire and EML on :-(
« on: 16 November 2010, 16:48:08 »

Hi Folks,

Just had a weird problem on the way home...   :-/

Car started running really rough - loss of power, not firing on all cylinders, and revs hunting at tick-over.
The EML (not the spanner one - the "emissions" one) started flashing, and then stayed on.

Read the fault codes, and it's coming up with:

P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

What on earth could cause a misfire on these 4 cylinders?!

When I started it up again a couple of minutes later, it ran fine.

Any ideas??  :'(

Is the foam underneath the skuttle wet?
Any oil or water in the plug wells?
Any signs of splits or scorching on the dispack rubbers?
Any signs of corrosion on the underside of the dispacks?

I'll check the foam under the skuttle in the morning to see if it's wet.  But didn't notice it being so when I was checking for loose connections (even though I wasn't specifically looking for it).

As for the dispack rubbers/corrosion...  I keep looking at the "how to" guide on removing them, and have to keep closing it due to getting quite overfaced by the task  :-[  :-[    ;D

Shall have to pluck up the courage to whip them off I suppose...  :-[

Cheers  :y

Incidentally, I've done 40 miles since the problem first occurred, and it's not happened again since?  EML still on though...

Please don't take these two questions the wrong way. :)

1. How were you driving at the time? Mine sometimes throws the light on if the revs are higher than the car thinks it should be, ie holding the throttle open after jump starting :-/ light soon goes out again once it has settled down.
2. How much fuel was in the tank at the time? Again, if I let mine get a bit too close to the bottom of the tank ie light flashing for a few miles, then it plays up if you brake hard, again it sorts itself out again once driven for a bit, (with more fuel in it).

I haven't read the fault codes on mine yet as I dread to think what it will throw up. ::) Which car is yours? I had a look at a couple of late registered estates before I bought mine, both were in need of engine work, both were ex thames valley and had suffered a bit since decommissioning. :-/
Hopefully something daft like a loose wire. Removing dis packs is easy enough, though passenger side one is a bit of a pig to lift out. If cam cover seals have gone then that is a bit more involved, but still a diy job. Some of the loom along the left hand cam cover is connected by plugs so perhaps worth checking all the visible plugs if you haven't already.
Good luck :y
