So what's the rattle?
« on: 19 November 2010, 23:05:29 »

Went to WIM during the week, knowing that something was wrong.  Steering was vague and wandery and there was a little rattle at low speeds over gentle road undulations.  I assumed it was wishbone bushes and a drop link rattle.

But WIM gave the all clear on all suspension components, front and rear, and the geometry setup has sorted out the vague steering.  (Thanks guys!)

Great news all round of course but I'm left wondering what is that rattle?  Offside front definitely, not audible over 30mph, not worse over potholes but little juddery clonking noises over slightly uneven road surfaces.  Any ideas?

that's exactly where it's coming from! In any case, as we all know, noise appears to come from one place but comes froom somewhere else quite often, so could well be this

Would still check drop link, needs to be checked with weight on the wheels as I recall. When you jack it up the play will disapear and it will seem fine. Give it a wiggle when the car is on the ground just to check.

Thanks guys - all very interesting.

I was fixated on the drop links but we had a good wiggle when the car was on its wheels on the ramp at WIM, so they are definitely OK.  The ARB front bushes aren't bad enough to rattle either.

The front discs are slightly warped and on my list to replace.  This must give extra wear on the caliper sliding pins, so I will definitely check them.

And if it's the cat...  it can jolly well keep on rattling because I can't afford one!

My downpipe heat shields are sh@$$ed and consequently rattle like a tin of nails.

If it cat related it will be the heat shields, not the cats themselves.
