Bonnet release cable snapped
« on: 20 November 2010, 14:04:55 »

Hi all. Not ran the car for a couple of weeks so decided to take it out for a spin. Started up fine then miss fire etc. Went to open the bonnet and the cable snapped.... It has snapped under the bonnet. Is there any way other than a tin opener to get it open? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers in advance. Mark :'(

Are you sure it's snapped? When you pulled it to open the bonnet, the snapping noise couldve been the little self tapper and bracket that holds the cable in place giving up the ghost. I've had problems with mine recently. Have you tried getting a 2nd person to push and lift the bonnet while you operate lever to help get it up? You might have yo release the lever from it's bracket in the footwell to get more of a pull.

I'd say try this first before anything drastic!

Has it snapped, or the clamp slipped on the end of the cable? Is there no action on the handle at all?

If it has snapped, I have no idea how to get it open. Even with the bonnet up, actuating the spring catch in the correct direction is almost impossible without the cable.

Hi guys. Had another look this afternoon. The handle in the footwell was loose and the end of the cable was moving so I assume it was broken somewhere under the bonnet. Cut half the grill out and managed to release the spring, put weight on the bonnet and managed to get it open. Hands now a bit bloodied but at least now I can try and give it a spray with the WD40 to try and sort out the missfire. Then its either a job for Elite Pete if the WD doesnt work or put it on here for spares or repairs. Thanks for the help though, much appreciated :y.

Well done, how did you release the spring?

Hi. I managed to get my fingers through a hole at the bottom of the slam panel and push the spring off. (Through the hole I made in the right hand side of the grill) If i had a piece of thin bar I may have been able to bend it and get it through the grill to push the spring off instead of demolishing the grill.  I still had to put quite a bit of weight on the bonnet as the bonnet spring was still holding the catch it position.
