Low mpg - engine faulty?
« on: 18 November 2010, 20:23:51 »

Hi all.

Now, before you all think this should be in the chat section, let me explain.   :)

I met up with Darth Loo-Knee yesterday (Really nice chap. He was kind enough to fetch a replacement auto box down for me as he was passing. Thanks a million Daz)

Whilst we were chatting I mentioned that the mig might have to go as I am between jobs at the moment and just would not be able to afford the petrol as I only average around 20 mpg. The best I ever see is about 28mpg whilst on a run.

Daz is convinced that my cambelt timing must be out (or something equally major) and that I should see 27-28 around town with a run returning well over 30. Now, I must confess that mrs Less and myself enjoy some spirited driving, but no matter what, I do not recall ever getting better mileage. I have had the car since 2004, and had a new engine fitted in 2005 after the local stealers managed to blow up the original.

At Daz'z suggestion (as I'm not the disbelieving type   ::) ) I need to confirm that other 2.6 owners (and I guess other V6 owners) actually do see mpg as reported by Daz. If so, I may well keep the car and get it sorted.

The car seems to perform ok although I've always felt that it is not a particularly smooth engine.

In other words I may or not have a problem, but I would not ignore the opinion of one of the forums finest  8-)

So, I'd appreciate it if other V6 owners would give me some honest feedback - good or bad

Thanks all, Les

I don't remember saying something equally major, what i did say though was when the timing is out the mpg is effected, also if the multi rams are not working this also effects the mpg.
I think the mpg is low on your car, on a run out of a 3.0 estate we had 35.4 sitting at 75 on the motorway, knocking about 27mpg.

I am pretty sure you will get a list saying something similar   :y

Although I have seen mid 30's on a run in my 3.0 auto it doesn't take much to reduce it substantially. Low 20's around town I would think is quite normal.

Well.......my experience of mig mpg is as follows. My old prefacelift 2.5 was driven very gently, but with very little motorway type driving. The readout was reset on average about every 3 months. It always showed around 24mpg.
My facelift 2.5 runs on LPG - so that may skew things a bit, but it is driven in the same way on the same roads and has over the last 5 months given the same result - approx. 24mpg.
I honestly dont know how this could be improved on by much without spending a lot of time at steady speed on motorway type roads.
Should add, both cars serviced every 4,000 miles.

I only manage 20 mpg around town in a 3.0 auto, and 34.7 at 70-80 on the motorway.

I get a surge of power at 4100 revs which would indicate the multi rams aren't working right, but my motorway mpg seems to contradict this.

Its also worth mentioning that it has been said on quite a few occasions on here that when Daz does a cambelt change in his usual precise and perfectionist fashion, it tends to improve the economy and performance of the car. :y
I might even be tempted to put up with a bit of prick ghastly music and have him do mine next year. ::) :D ;D

My 2.5 averages around 23 mpg knocking around here in wet Cornwall, mostly 6-8 mile journeys, I can't tell you what it does on a good run as it has a pikey wind break in tow then. The best I have seen from it is on a run up to Plymouth and back where it averaged about 27 mpg but I wasn't hanging around on the way back and quite a lot of hills on route so I suppose on a motorway run at sensible speed it ought to crack 30  ::)

I currently have five Omegas on the road - 2.6, 3.0 manual and auto and a 3.2. out of these, the 2.6 (manual) is the worst - I've never seen more than 28 out of it, even on a run. And about 25 on my commute

Autos are always going to suffer poor MPG in urban.

However, on a steady, long motorway run at a constant 70mph, should easily return mid 30s.

My old 2.5 auto returned about 26 on average on my daily commute, my 3.0 auto about 24 (pre LPG), 3.2 unknown, as I now take a different route due to pointless speed limits.

Can someone show Daz how to change his MID from km to miles :D

My mpg is in line with the op, and the timing was set with great care by the potteries maestro himself and I drive gently most of the time.

In part I put it down to the vastly overcrowded and undulating roads around here where the 2 pedal tango is the norm, but even on a long motorway run to Greece in the summer I hardly bettered 32 mpg, and that was at 60-65 most of the time.

Mine is a 2.5 auto which I've had for six and a half years and I average 24.2 mpg. I reckon it is around the 20 mark for town work and I have never seen above 30 on a run (90ish is my favoured cruising speed).

Blimey - I've managed over 32mpg from my MV6 over a holiday (1800 miles).  That included some 130mph stints on the French autoroutes ::)

Recent trip computer averages:

1000 miles of 'day-to day' driving (mixed local/rural/urban runs on B`s and some on A`s, but no motorways): 26 mpg

330 miles (Wirral to East-Kent) only on motorways; in cruise at (slightly more than) legal speeds: 37.5 mpg
