locking problems
« on: 27 November 2010, 18:17:35 »

I purchased a gls yesterday with a central locking fault

hopefully this description will make sense

I can sometimes lock (but not deadlock) the boot and the rear doors but not passenger or drivers door. this behaves the same if I use the key in the door or the remote.

Sometimes nothing will lock until you've locked and unlocked the passenger door manually with the pin.

the passenger door can be lock and unlocked manually with the pin, but the drivers door pin will not move what ever and is stuck in unlocked

now the real question is the passenger door lock not working because the drivers door lock is jammed or is it independently broken ?

how does the deadlock system work / why do the back doors not dead lock even though they lock ?

I've found the guides on door card removal and door lock replacement

It'll be the central locking solonoid in the drivers door. That one triggers the whole central locking. Best bet is to place a wanted ad for one. There are plenty of breakers on here :y

thanks for your quick reply,

brill that at least mean only one door card to deal with

i have some further questions........

is there a way to get it so you can lock the drivers door with the key as a stop gap while i get a new solonoid ?

is the key mechanism linked to the door lock electrically via the soloniod or backed up with a link rod of some description?

what would happen if the battery was dead is there an unlock only link rod to get you in, in this event ?

you just use the key in the driver's door if the battery is dead and it'll lock the driver's door only (not deadlock) just like in the olden days. Ordinarily, locking the driver's door also operates micro-switches in the motor (it's not actually a solenoid  ;)). There's a guide on replacing these switches which will give you an idea of what's going on inside it.  :y :y :y

hmm the thing is the key doesn't have any effect on the door.

it turns freely enough in the barrel, sometimes locks and unlocks the back doors / boot but does nothing to the drivers door.

I'll be pulling it apart as soon as time / weather allows but in the mean while its blocked in with its twin for safe keeping

There are various rods & linkages between interior & exterior door handles, the central door locking motor and the actual latching mechanism and even though it was only a few months ago that I replaced my exterior door handle I can't remember what exactly goes where from where. It does sound like you're missing a linkage/rod somewhere though.
Access is the only difficult part about it though.
