Got me a TomTom 700 series and provided that you keep the maps up to date and use the MapShare facility it works perfectly. Like all guides, including maps, you also still have to, and should also read the road signs.
No excuse for getting lost if a bit common sense is used. The tongue is also a great tool if you just ask.
Beware of the West Country and Irish miles though..... they seem to be far longer than the ones most of us use.  :D ;D Knowing left from right is also a basic requirement.
Worst SatNav is the Clarin (Phillips) thing that is built into mine, and the placement of the Multi use control right next to the handbrake is one great annoyance. Mine is now capped with an old WD top to stop it getting activated by accident.
Life is fun  ;)

Despite its age, with reasonably up to date maps (2008), the CARiN is a million times more useful than any junk TomTom release.  Portable units are simply hopeless where it matters most - in the city centre.

The CARiN is a proper navigation unit, not just a GPS module like TomTom - unplug the gps unit from a CARiN and drive 20 miles, it'll still know where it is.  Try using a useless TomTom without a strong gps signal ;)

The button isn't ideal, but not bad - except when passenger gets in ;D

Well, if you want a freebie, you'll find the reminents of my last one at the end of the Aston Expressway, on the tunnel bits, as the useless heap of junk let me done for the last time, so out of the window it went  :-[

Compare to a proper navigation unit, you will realise how poor the portable units are for accuracy.

Thats before you put a heat reflective windscreen in  :-X

CARiN in MFL 3.0 Elites.  Its old and slow, and less than ideally located (but still better than gonks stuck all over the windscreen).  It was replaced with the Siemens NCDC201x in 3.0/3.2 facelift Elites, which is newer/faster, and uses the same display was the fuel computer and steering wheel controls...
