Auto Gearbox stuck in "Park"
« on: 08 December 2010, 12:03:29 »

Started the car up this morning, usual "brakelight check" message, pressed brake pedal, message went off but gearlever still locked in park. Problem with brakelight switch possibly????

Very likely, in the mean time, if you lift the gaitor from the gear shift, you'll see a yellow lever which will allow you to by-pass the solenoid.  :y

Surely not, if the check message is clearing when the brake pedal is pressed?

Can you hear the solenoid click when you press the brake pedal?

the brake light switch has two sets of contacts. A new switch cured mine, as it has others here!  :y

Cheap bulbs can confuse the brake check module, maybe try more expensive bulbs, and clean up all contacts.  :-/  :-/

Thanks for all that chaps. In the meantime been out and started the car again, no problem this time, must be something intermittent. As long as I know I can disengage manually I'm happy with that.

AFAIK it simply checks that the brake light bulbs are working.

Nothing to do with auto or manual.  :y

Sorry, I mis-understood you  ;). As djac says, it just confirms that both brake lights work when you press the brake pedal for the first time.  :y Take a brake light bulb out & see what it does  ;) you should get the same display  ;)

until you press the brake pedal, the system cannot check the bulbs - hence it goes off when you press the pedal. Until then its not had a proper circuit back from the bulbs to verify they are ok.
