Cant start the tractor
« on: 08 December 2010, 12:10:39 »

2.5TD Old, been off the road for quiet some, done about 2 battery's so far, car was running fine before being laid up.

So far measured glow plugs, all arround 2 ohms, checked volts on each plug, all ok, guessing asking too much for this weather with a cold engine, just cranks untill I kill the battery.

going to pop one of the injectors this afternoon to make sure its fueling, also thinking about wiring up another battery directly to the glow plugs and diss the relay so as to assist the cranking battery, dont really wont to kill the plugs though.

Anything else I should be doing, checking??

Chris. :(

I wonder if the fuel might have gelled/crystallised in the cold weather?.....especially-so if there wasn`t much quantity in the tank.
Drain any water out of the fuel-filter/sedimenter, then play a hair dryer (or fan heater) on the diesel filter/s and the engine`s diesel-pump for 10 mins or so before trying any cranking.....make sure the in-tank pump is making the 'right noises' too.

In REALLY cold weather, I`ve found that a fully charged battery is an absolute must......and try 'flooring' the throttle (but only during cranking!) after giving the glow plugs a few cycles to warm up the chambers.....it really shouldn`t harm the plugs for them to be cycled a few times. ;)

I`ve taken to using Lucas 'Extreme' Diesel Fuel Additive, recently....`seems to make quite a difference on cold starts. :y

I may be teaching you to suck eggs but 2 cycles of glow plugs and floor the clutch helped mine started np when sensor said -8 after a week no driving.

Agreed they need a good battery, and as said how cold has your cold been? Cheap diesel goes lumpy quick.

When you say its been sitting for how long.
I'd change the fuel filter first(mind and fill it with diesel before you re-fit it).
crack 1 injector feed pipe then turn the engine over.
If your getting fuel through and it won't fire after youv'e heated the g/plug twice you might need to tow start it (if its a manual).
Is there any smoke coming from the exhaust when cranking
Also do a paper clip test i'm thinking along the lines of crank sensor failure

quick update, while I drink me tea, still no joy, drianed filter, white smoke out of back, cranked no. One injecter, it sequencialy dribbles out, should it be dribbling? Or higher preasure,

Been standing for about nine months, cant tow it on my own, the car as m plate so not worth, much, is its not going tomorrow, thinking its going to get towed to the wiegh bridge, need the space cleared.

Oh and its a manual.

Wow! Dont weigh it! Were abouts in Essex are you?! If all else fails Im a will volunteer of these things :D

Have you tried cranking it with the crank sensor plug undone? Just keep going on that, it'll 'warm up' after a few long goes if she does want to go. Did you say how much fuel was in it?

About 20 litres, giving up for today, too dark and cold where its parked up, no electric here.

Problem I have, is the rug has been pulled out from under my feet, where its parked up at short notice, so it has to go by tomorrow, along with a couple of other cars unfortunatly the td is on the bottom of the list in terms of age, so if she's not fired up tomorrow its not looking good.

I'LL the crank sensor tomorrow, if I get a chance, probfably gjing to be to busy rescuing the other vechiles.

Ok, well let me know what happens with it, I may know of someone able to pick it up as would hate to see a potentially good car go to waste. Whats the colour and rough location by the way?  :)

ok quick way to start it, take can of Brake cleaner with you 2moro
fully charged battery, undo airpipe from airfilter box to turbo, squirt brake cleaner direct into pipe that leads to turbo i.e the nlet pipe(best doen with 2 of you but i have done it on me own found i could just reach the key over the door whle squirting brake cleaner into pipe) after cranking for 10 secs or so she will fire up albeit noisily, it may need two or three atempts but she will suck the diesel up this way, HTH :y

Thanks omegatoy, I did wonder about this when I checked the air filter  today.

Guessing brake cleaner, easy start, switch cleaner, wont ignite under compression, but may aid if one or two cylinders are trying to fire.

Will give it a go tomorrow.

take some diesel with you in bottle and warm it up on the way there then empty the diesel filter and fill with warm diesel same idea as hair dryer but and you have no electric its next best option then easy start then see how you go
just my 2p worth
good luck
