Projectors do look similar to HIDs but the projector is just the design of the reflector and how the ordinary type bulb sits in the head lamp.

HIDs are High Intensity Discharge and work completely differently from an ordinary bulb. An ordinary bulb has a filament inside a glass bubble that glows white hot when a volatge is applied, however a HID strikes an arc up inside the bulb, similar to a welding arc, and rather than a few amps of an ordinary bulb uses 1000's of amps but only pulls about 35W.

Xenon is an inert gas like halogen is and is the gas inside the glass bubble/bulb to prevent the filament from self destructing while it's getting white hot. But the bulb is still a normal type bulb. 'Xenon bulbs' from Halfords etc are these types of bulb.

for the pedants out there, I know hat you plant bulbs in the garden, but it gets confusing if you call a bulb a lamp .......  ;D  ;D  ;D

Hi Andy
That is a good thought, but it only works if the car has not been modified.  For instance, my car is a pre-facelift but has mini-facelift HID's fitted.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

I never mentioned any models of car  :-/, just what the differences were between the different types of 'bulb'
The whole list is there to choose from.  ;)
