Steering Issues and suspension.
« on: 20 November 2010, 22:04:51 »

Since I bought my omega just over a month ago I have been trying to get to the bottom of whats causing it to pull to the left and sometimes the right.  It feels twitchy when you are driving in a straight line, its as if you are constantly trying to correct it although not that severe.

Its been tracked, nothing wrong there, been balanced and the front brakes have just been replaced. Also when I come to park in a space the steering goes very heavy as if the pas is not working at all.  Could this be linked?  I was told the pas pump may be on its way.  Is there any known issues with the steering on these?  Its a Y reg 2001 2.5 V6 Elite saloon.  Not sure what to check next.

The other thing that I am struggling to find is a o/s/r shocker with self leveling.  Hardly any scrap yards have them, parts companies have quoted anything up to £215 each.  Does anyone have some of these for sale?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

On the first problem ... chrisgixer wrote an excellent guide to suspension & steering .. well worth a read ..

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1283124735

Power steering pumps and fluid do get "tired" but it is, apparently, quite rare.

Shock absorbers should only ever be replaced in pairs, and personally I would not touch a single used one with the proverbial.

I recently changed both my rears (self levelling) ... cost was £147.96 + VAT = £173.85. That was with TC discount ...  "normal" price is £116 + VAT each ....  so the TC proved a godsend once again .. :)

Agree as said. Diagnosing wishbones bushes and bushes generally is probably hardest, but odds are they need replacing on cars this old.

Really?  I thought it was reasonably common...

Tracking is probably a waste of money on the Omega, it needs a proper geometry check.

But before that, look for any signs of play.

Always replace shaocks in pairs.  Self levellers are around £150 a pair from a dealer, if you have a Trade Club card.

Reyt, I will have a look at the fluid and see what thats like and check the bushes and suspension arms.

Can you suggest a place to buy the new shocks?

Thanks again.

Just following up on a few things... The wishbone bushes do need replacing, so that is going to be done shortly.  The rear suspension I am struggling to get at a reasonable price (nothing less than £230 at the mo), it appears the self leveling shockers are dear.  I notice a lot of people on here have Trade Club cards, is it possible for me to get one of these, if so how do I go about it?

Any help appreciated as usual.

Thanks.

Just to update I ordered a pair of self levellers today from my local Vauxhall dealer.  I used the club card and it came to £235 for them, is this about right?  I know the vat has gone up but I thought they would have been cheaper.

No it sounds very expensive. I'm on the TC site now, it says that for self levelling shocks it's £73.98.

So times 2 plus 20% VAT is £177.55.

Get back to the dealer and ask for the proper price.

Little hint - don't let them fob you off by saying something along the lines of 'the printer is broken', so they can't give you a receipt. Use your TC card and make sure you get a proper receipt which should have the Autobahnstormers address in the customer bit (which shows it's gone through as a TC sale).

I might just be unlucky with my local dealers, but I find that they're a bunch of miseries who don't like to give people the discount they're entitled to.

Always remember Andyc on here if you have trade club access issues hes always helpfull. Although paying for mail order may not ideal for some.

150 to 170 odd for the pair i believe as said. So they are not quoting trade club prices. Could try another dealer ?
