Questions about 5-speed-auto Y25DT OPEL omega
« on: 16 January 2011, 21:55:09 »

Hi guys,
I have a couple of questions about the opel omega I drive for the past year. It's 2002 with the BMW I6 Y25DT and the 5L40-E 5 speed auto gearbox. I know that engine and transmission are N/A for the vauxhalls, but I'm sure you'll give me some clues anyway :)

So, I read that the software of the transmission can be updated, but I can't find much info on the topic. Can I do it myself? I am from Bulgaria, and no one here, including the Opel dealer, wants to do this for me. I'm not a beginner and I have the OBD2 interface. I just don't know what I need to do.

I also know there is a way to "revive" the missing horses from the bmw engine. I mean the same engine on a BMW is 163HP, and not 150. this is some marketing shit opel did to have different specs from the bmw. As far as I know it's done by repositioning the timing belt. but the problem is that the 5L40-e gearbox is rated for 340Nm. Now the engine gives 300Nm and after such procedure it will be more than 340Nm. BMW also put this tranny on 330d so I don't get it! they even have it in the x series. how come it handles more than it's made for? how can I reset the timing belt (a local former BMW dealer does it) or chip it without having to buy a new transmission after 2k km :)?
I had more things to ask, but can't remember now so.. :)
Thanks

Hello & Welcome to OOF :y

The gearbox update is not 'end user' possible, it NEEDS a dealer level computer - Tech-2 with TIS subscription to perform it for you.  What improvements are possible, I suspect noone here actually knows due to that box not being available over here.

The performance increases you mention are not from adjusting the timing, but from adding a chip to restore back to BMW spec.  We know the UK standard autoboxes can't take the power, but am personally unsure of the torque rating of your box to know how well it will cope.

The update we have/use is for the AR35/25 though, do we have one for the 5L40-E 5? As its a newer box, wonder if it would already have our latest version?  :-/

I think the Y25DT is a flash, not plug in EEPROM.

I suspect there would be some updates since 2002. Our 'big improvement' came circa 2005, long after that box was no longer fitted to UK cars ;)

For the performance gains, you would need to speak to a tuning specialist.

For the gearbox, you need to speak to someone with a GM Tech2 and a valid TIS subscription (with security dongle if required).

Neither is DIY with low cost OBDII kit.

Ah yes, but we are dubious about your chip ;)

It could well be that GM made different variants of the 5L40E with different torque ratings just as they did with the 4L30. ;)

go to your local opel dealer for the gearbox update.. i'm sure that they won't have any ideea what it is but insist. go to a greek dealer if you are close to their border and see what you can do there, or even here in romania you can try :). i wouldn't chip the engine, lots of things go wrong after it although you get 195hp and over 400nm ;)

Point taken, but its just as likely to be my driving style. (Chip was supposed to produce 170ish) :y

Thanks for all the answers guys.
I want to ask something more. Few months ago I had a little accident and the turbo stopped working. It was a broken vacuum hose which the guys from the auto service I went isolated and told me it's nothing to do with the engine. They didn't know what it's for because they do engines only. So I followed the hose and from the engine bay it goes in the right fender (the car is with left hand steering wheel) and than inside behind the dashboard somewhere. I have no idea what it's for, but everything works fine, though it's not connected on the engine side. what can this be?
It's not the recirc valve, it works.

Here is some info about the 5L40-E. Pretty extensive, but the max torque is not stated.
