43 MPG out of a v6 How.
« on: 16 January 2008, 12:43:38 »

Was on the way home last night and just wanted to see how good i could be with the MPG reset the counter and at the C C at 50-60 and got at best 43 MPG this was on a hour run at one speed. As soon as i got on to the a roads with stop start it when down to 33 which it is a now. Is the counter accurate was thinking that was good and has been the best that i have ever had.

43mpg from a 3.2 V6!  :o

Wow, that's incredible, best I've ever got from mine is 25-27 on a motorway run although I've never tried it at 50-60mph. ::)

That was with a VERY VERY light right foot and CC on. With the prices of petrol going up just seem to use so much  so just this was just a way of checking. I thing a lot of people driving past thouth that i was an under cover police car as they slowed right down and started to use there indcaters when changing lanes

Which was fun ;)

Trouble with consumption figures is they are only relevant to when you last reset the trip computer.

I work on a tankful, (or rather from full to the start of the red) is about 60 Litres and I get about 320 miles from that. My daily commute is pretty lousy so I can't really expect much better.

Thats true, the way that i come into work is all A roads and the mpg drops but on the way back it on the m1 from Doninton down to the the Leicester juc and the mpg goes up.

The best I have had on a straight flat motorway run is 47 with the cruise set at 68. What really nails the mpg is stop start town driving.
Its also interesting to set the cruise and watch the instant mpg figures. It's noteworthy to see the effect opening windows, turning the steering wheel and gong up gradients has on mpg.

Most I've had indicated on mine was about 37. Same thing, motorway cruising at boring speeds, although I didn't religiously stick to under 60.

The MID isn't necessarily accurate although mine is pretty good, especially on long runs at constant speed. I think it's a bit more optimistic around town. Try it brim to brim on a tankful next time and see if the manual calculations back it up.

Best I ever managed was 40.4 over 1.5hrs driving in a manual MV6.
Normally it was nearer 27mpg...

My current tractor averages 46mpg and will get to 54mpg if I drive like a vicar (Passat 1.9tdi...zzzzz)  but boy you know it isn't an Omega! :(

I know that having the A/C on will drop the MPG but would the heat system do the same :question

Thanks.

Best I can manage on a run according to the MID is about 35mpg.

As for around town, which is most of my driving, getting above 24mpg is a result.  That's on a 3.0 V6 auto.

From a full tank down to about the 20 litre mark, which is when I fill up, I get around 220 miles.

Thanks.

The AC doesn't make such a big difference as people say. Well under 1MPG I reckon, and during the summer months it is more than offset by the fact that the engine warms up quicker, IMHO.

The heater should make no difference. It's only waste heat that would otherwise have been dissipated in the radiator.

Blimey, people getting up to 43 mpg with 6 cylinder engines, I am struggling to get above 26 with my 2.2 auto estate, I know that the 4 pots probably have to work a bit harder but still....... My old 2.0 auto estate could easily get up to 35 and that was not being gentle with the right foot either.  Seems to me that all this extra anti emission junk is just there to waste fuel and create more CO2.  I feel better getting that off my chest!
