3.2 Coil Packs

Hello all

A few months back, I had a mechanic mate of mine replace the HBV on my F/L 3.2 Elite.  When he was stripping the motor down, he noticed that there was some corrosion on the underside of the coil packs.  It was particularly bad on the right coil pack as you view the engine from the front of the car.

Recently the EML has thrown up codes for random misfires and misfires on cylinders 4, 5 and 6.  Are these the cylinders fed by the right bank coil pack?

The only noticible symptom so far is a slighty irregular idle speed when cold, although this has only happened twice so far.

I am making assumptions that thes faults are linked to the corroded coil packs, and I'm also assuming its only going to get worse with time?

Can the coil packs be cleaned up/refurbished, or do they have to be replaced?

Do they need to be changed as a pair?

Any idea of cost?

you can replace just the one bank, and could well be the issue, about £70 off the top of my head

iirc the right hand bank coilpack is for cyls 2-4-6, so might account for most of your misfires but not cyl 5.

Do you have any oil/water in plug wells?

1-3-5 is right hand side of car 2-4-6 left side of car :y

I'll check out the oil/water in plug wells situation at the weekend. Do i need to take much off the engine to get to them?

I'm looking at around £85 plus the dreaded for each coil-pack from Vauxhall. I would really like to know if there is anything that can be done to repair/refurbish my ones, before I shell out that kinda cash, cos that money was set aside to have my rims refurbished!  :(

The right-hand coil pack is a little tricky to remove compared to the other side, you have a cable tray in the way and space is a bit tight at the back. But it's doable, cos I did it! This side tends to catch drips from the scuttle tray above (on a join) so you've probably got water in the plug holes. Historically, it would seem, the right hand coil pack (Viewed from the front) gives the most trouble on the 3.2 / 2.6. If you are seeing corrosion on top, then this points to water in the plug wells beneath. Removing the wiring and tray to gain access is a bit of a pig, so be careful not to break anything.
Now, if you do find just water on the wells, then in my experience this can be caused by water running out of the scuttle area directly onto the R/H coil pack. You might want to consider sealing the joint where plastic meets metal. To do this you will have to remove the scuttle, which in all honesty makes gaining access to removing the coil pack easier in the first place. Let us know what you find. :y :y

Thanks very much for all the advice guys!

It's all starting to make more sense to me now.  I don't use the car as much as I would like (fuel costs) so she does sit around a bit.  The time when I really noticed the misfiring/poor running at startup was the first time I used the car after a big dumping of snow had begun to melt.  What's the betting that some of that water found its way under the scuttle and into the right hand coil pack??? >:(

I read the guide that jonnycool posted, and I noted that the 2.6/3.2 coil-packs have a rubber section that should seal around the plug holes.  If water is getting past mine, then is it game over for the coil-packs? Or can anything be done?
