What to look out for on 2.2
« on: 28 January 2011, 09:39:50 »

Hi,
I won the bid on an Omega 2.2:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150552662117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2196wt_1139

What things should I look out for before parting with the full cash.
What are the common problems associated with a 2.2?

If you have bid and won you are due to pay the full amount. You should have asked this question BEFORE committing to buy.

That is the nature of an auction site....

You now have a legal obligation to buy the car at your winning bid and the listing clearly states that you are bidding to buy and not to come and view! Maybe I'm old fashioned but as Entwood stated you should have asked before buying the car!!

I would certainly agree with that.

That's fine.
I'm not saying I'm not going to pay the full cash price as agreed.

I'm just saying is there anything to look out for before giving the buyer the cash. (Regardless I'm going to buy the car anyway)

The main 2.2 issues are flush the coolant system and get nice fresh antifreeze in there, the HG's dont seem to be the most resilient.
clean throttle body and breathers
the scuttle can leak and drip water over the coil packs causing issues
the main sensor for causing grief is the cam, so suspect this 1st with starting issues.

very unusual for pedal trick to work, so you will need a code reader to check the ecu's

Don't think he is obliged to buy the full price if the car turns out to be "not as advertised".
If it turns out like that than I think he has a legitimate reason to not pay or ask for a full refund ( I didn't read the add for the car)
Check for codes if you can (have a scanner cause it is 2.2).
Check for leaking cam cover gasket.
Get the car to full temp then turn it on and off a few times (cam sensor will make problems here if it is on its way out).
Also check the heating.
Tyres thread possible wandering of the car on warped roads (suspension check like on all migs).
2.2 migs seem to be the most reliable of all and are easier to work with than v6 (yea yea I know the comments about missing 2 cilinders)

Yes you are.... by the very nauture of your opening post :

"What things should I look out for before parting with the full cash."

Matters not .. you have agreed to buy it, at the price you bid .. no looking or haggling.

IMHO you are actually asking members of OOF to help you defraud the seller of the vehicle.

If I was the seller and you tried it I would take you to court for breach of contract. I just wish ebay would help sellers do that... would stop a lot of the shysters and make ebay the pleasure it once was.

Just been reading about ebays policy.

It states that if the car was not as described/advertised then you are not obliged to pay.
If for example the sellers says 'car runs fine and all electrics work',
then when you get there the cars got blue smoke coming out the exhaust, and the electric windows do not work - then plain and simple - you do not have to pay.

Some people say, you should have asked the seller more questions.
But it's ebay policy that whatever is advertised should be a true depiction of the item. Therefore it's not really the buyers job to ask 101 questions to try and attain information out of the seller, especially if the seller knowingly with-held information on the advertisement.

What if you did pay for the car, then on the journey back, you realise the windows do not work, or the car overheats?
Then you would have wished, you didn't pay the full price, BEFORE checking out the car - this is why there is a an ebay policy for this.

However if everything is as described then you have to pay.
(Which I hope is the case)

Agreed

What you said the first time.

So, compare the car to the advert... NOT a list of points obtained from OOF.

Very different actions IMHO

And if the car is NOT "as advertised" you walk away .. you do NOT start to "barter" the price down.

The reason why I wanted a list of potential problems from OOF was so that I can actually check the car thoroughly.

For example the seller states 'The only bad bit really is there are few age related marks'.
What if the 2.2 suffers from a problem - say over heating, that I was not aware of, but the seller knew it overheated.
Someone from OOF then told me to watch out for this overheating issue.

If only I compared the car to the statement 'The only bad bit really is there are few age related marks', then I wouldn't really check for this overheating issue.
But if somebody had told me it may overheat, I would start to check for this and bring it to the sellers attention.

Then for example if the seller tries to sell it again, and someone on OOF asked a question 'what do you reckon to this car advertised on ebay' I could add value by stating, I've already seen the car and it does overheat.

Isn't that the point of the forum, to try and allow forum members to get the best result and help them out.

I would never try to 'con' someone or try and get them to help me 'defraud' anyone, as I would like to remain a member of this forum, and I'm pretty sure doing that wouldn't be in the forums best interests.

Raj, It seems to me that now you have "purchased" this car you are asking members for any "potential" problems the 4-pot may have/exhibit with (what I perceive to be) the intention of trying to haggle with the seller. It`s simple really..........view the car (bear in mind  that the owner doesn`t have to allow you a test drive as the auction has ended) if you feel that it has been misadvertised, have a chat with the owner and if no deal can be made, walk away

Maybe not articulate enough :-[ What I meant was that if Raj feels that the ad was misleading but is still prepared to go ahead & purchase.....talk it through with the seller. It does happen on occasion where a seller genuinely believes that how he has described an item is a true representation until shown otherwise :)

OK cool.

Hopefully I will be bringing the car home.

I know the Cambelt will need changing soon as its done 23k miles.
Is there a 'time life' on the rocker gasket? (after how many miles (if not done already) do you think I should get it replaced?)

As soon as i get the car, I'l do the usual, spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, coolant - is there anything else? or is that just about everything?
