Heater By Pass Valve, its behind the engine block, drivers side. It shunts water into the heater matrix or engine block, depending on your climate setting. These are known to fail, check that for leaks or possibly sucking in air...

HG's on V6 are generally very reliable, has it had regular coolant changes with good 50/50 mix?

Ideally coolant change every 2 years/20k. What are all the symptoms you`re experiencing :question

Did they reuse the bolts?

Should last a LOT longer than 20,000 miles

i have already started stripping it down the cambelt is off, i dont know if the headbolts were changed they used red sealent everywhere in stead of replacing the seals had to buy rocker gaskets and little rubber rings for rocker cover bolts to stop it leaking oil bloody garages they can never be trusted, it was done on warranty when i first had it :y

head gasket only lasted 20k? Its either being seriously abused with pure water coolant, or something was not fitted right. Should be talking 100,000 minimum  for a HG

its had a good life but i serviced it regulary do you think there is a possibilty that the garage didnt use new head bolts just changed the head gasket they didnt renew any of the other seals because i had to change the rocker gasket recently after and small rubber seals that bolt the rocker covers down  :y

The garage doesn't fill with confidence from what your saying mate, to do such a big job and then scimp on gaskets thejn load everything with red sealer perhaps taking it back maybe a better option.  :(
