NEW ENGINE????
« on: 31 January 2011, 16:17:49 »

Hi all. Quite a few problems with the omega. Shes burning oil when shes cold, quite abit of blue smoke. Shes loosing coolant somewhere aswel (no oil in the water or water in the oil) she cuts out when idling. Engine tapping when cold. Revs up and down by itself. Engine making a slight whistling noise. She is just sounding so rough! All this has just started happening quite recently. Engine light comes on now and then but no faults showing up. Shes done 200k miles. Im thinking is it worth getting it fixed? Different engine? or scrap?  Just dont know what to do  :(

Just a word of warning if you do decide to go for a replacement engine then please take a look at the SVS Cardiff  engine replacement services website and then move on as fast as you can!! It would take to long to describe the attrocities they comitted on my 3.0 ltr MV6 including fitting a 2.5ltr "by mistake"?? it was only DLK who spotted the "mistake" and also the fact that they had'nt bothered to bolt the engine back in,plus a major oil leak which after a number of trips back to Cardiff was never fixed! The list goes on because in addition to the engine I also had an automatic transmission  fitted by them and again on inspection by DLK he  had to put in 5litres of ATF,So did I get my money back? Try £900 out of a £2000+ bill because they just bull**** their way around any complaints and threatened legal action. The car has now got the correct engine fitted thanks to DLK and I would recommend you PM him as he may well be able to source a good used unit for you and fit it 100% correctly :y :y

It does sound like you need another engine. A 2 litre engine shouldnt cost much from a breaker, just the hassle of fitting it, or paying someone to fit it for you.
If you have to pay garage rates to have an engine fitted its unlikely to be cost effective imo. Its probably better to weigh the car in and buy another. 2.0 Omegas are cheap as chips. :y

I only wish that I known Daz before I had entrusted my car to the bunch of cowboys that I've already mentioned :( >:(

A few of those things sound fairly easy to fix yourself.

The whistling noise and engine revs moving on their own is almost certainly an air leak, somewhere in the inlet piping between the MAF sensor and the cylinder head, or a leaking vac pipe connected to the throttle body or inlet manifold.  Should be able to find where exactly by spraying carb cleaner around with engine running.  Where the spray causes the revs to change is where unmetered air is getting in.

For the cutting out while idling, mostly this can be sorted by reference to Grumpy's guide: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1194007453

Coolant loss you need to identify location, usually Heater Bypass Valve, rear of engine UK driver's side.
Possibly early-stage headgasket failure; shine a bright little torch down the spark-plug holes looking for coolant on a piston crown, a few hours after it's last been running.

Oil-burning behaviour may be trickier to sort, but fix the other things and see how you feel then.  :)

Yep, before doing anything, clean the breathers, idle control valve and throttle body fully as per the guide.

Depends, with blocked breathers the oil consumption can increase considerably due to a pressurised crank case forcing oil past the rings and worn stem seals

i had something very similar clouds of blue smoke and rough running and would stall regulary on idle i replaced my engine and took old one apart found out piston ring had gone on one cylender and dropped a valve on another and cam belt had jumped numerous teeth it took two minutes to fill my mechanics garage lol and i bet the 2.0 litre engine is easier to change than the 2.5 lol but then you can get some good power units if you look around
