V6 HT leads - which length boot?
« on: 03 February 2011, 21:10:27 »

Looking to change the HT leads on my 98 2.5 elite to hopefully cure the misfire. Called to get a price from local motor factors and they have two sets with different length boots - 115mm and 130mm. I reckon the 130 are the ones as when the shorter ones are fitted the 90 degree bend at the top of the boot is being pushed up by the edge of the well.
Can anyone confirm ny opinion and is there any other difference apart from the length, and of course the price!  ;)

you could always pop a driver's side plug lead off & measure it.  ::) ::) ::)

I did this and it measures 115mm but the set on at the moment are not the originals and are the ones which look strained. They were replaced after my cam cover seals decided to turn into collanders and allow the oil to fill the plug wells!  ;)
Will get the 130mm ones tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.  ;)

The cheap ones although work seem to be a crap fit. I have seen alot of them that the ribs are way above the plug holes  :-?

Vauxhalls fit perfect but are expensive. Magnacore are good and fit very well less than Vx but still quiet dear.

I have to hold my hands up and admit to buying plug leads from EuroCarParts.

They were horrendously cheap (<£40), but identical in every way* to the OE leads.  The writing on them, the length, the fit.  If anything, they are a little tight in the plug wells.  I used a socket extension bar to gently tap them home..... no problem with fouling on the edge of the well.

* They dont have the insulation tube on the drivers bank, so I used a cable tie to hold them away from the exhaust manifold.

There isn't a great deal of 'good' I can say about ECParts, but in this instance.  Muy Bien!

You are not kidding  :o :o All I want is to cure the misfire which appeared when the coil pack gave up. How / why does a knackered coil pack affect the HT leads?
What do the ribs do? Are they to keep out moisture? If so they didn't work when the scuttle leaked!
Have bought a set of the cheaper ones with 130mm boots, will look at fitting them when I get some 'time off for good behaviour' from SWMBO.  ;) ;)
Sorry if I am rambling but I cannot multitask i.e. breath. think and type at the same time  :y
