Erratic handling
« on: 12 April 2009, 20:33:56 »

A strange one this.......
When i go round a right hand corner a little quick it feels like the car digs in and the back end trys to step out. Quite unnerving :-/ Also above 70mph the car starts to feel wondery????
All tyre pressures are 32psi
No clonks or bangs etc....
All springs look fine
Wishbones and drop links all fine
Shocks feel fine and rears are new.
Full Geo at WIM with no advisories on anything,
Slight play in the rack but not excessive.

This has come on suddenly
No problems when going arouund a left turn.
Like i say a hard one to describe and fault find.
Thought i would post up on the off chance someone may have had a similar problem.
Only thing i can think of is that the camber/toe has gone miles out on one side :-/

Possibly a stupid suggestion, but, is there a rear anti-roll bar, if so check the bushes, I had problems with taht on a previous car of mine...  not overly familiar with the rear suspension of the miggy though...

Hi had similar symptons on mine a while back, when i first got it
if you took a right bent tight it would feel really unstable :o
got the tracking done, but was still their. took it to the local garage
am sure it was the Steering Idler as far as i remember.

im sure one off the other Guys will Know :y it just sounded familiar

Wim check the stearing idler usually, and wishbones and springs, esp if Tony sets it up himself.

But they dont check rear donut bushes, have had trouble with mine. Worth a look, under rear doors there is a triangular plate, 3 bolts with one big one in the middle. The bush is behind there. Roughly the diameter of a cd. Sometimes the rubber comes free from the metal cup thats pressed into the arm. If you take the plate off make sure you support the arm with a jack. It wont fall but its easier and should hold the arm in the correct position for your new set up.

Should add my symptoms are/where not as dramatic as yours so may not be the cause, but i would think you have to eliminate them before looking further. Hth

I know this is an old thread. I did a search and found it. The first post describes the problem I have. I've had the car two years and its always done it. I've changed the wishbones and poly bushed them, i've changed the track rods, and ive changed the springs and shocks all round. Could this be the steering idler causing this? Also when turning right onto my drive way it sometimes creeks from the left fron of the car.

I had a creaking/crunching noise coming from that side. It was the steering idler. Made the steering feel alot more positive when I replaced it. :)
